Show 2A April 1997 Moab Happenings wm As we prepare this edition for the printers, I can hear the roar of jeeps as they load up and prepare to return to where they came form. This years edition of the traditional Easter Safari w as every bit as wild as past years. The parts stores were kept busy replacing broken and bent parts, the tire stores were replacing tires as fast as the four-heelers could leave it on the slickrock, and the car washes were enjoying their Christmas. w MOAB HAPPENINGS "Moab Happenings is published by Camonlands Advertising Company of Moab, Utah and is provided free throughout Grand and San Juan County, Utah as a visitor information guide. While it has tremendous economic impact on the community, there is also a significant social impact that lies just beneath the surface. Local workers in the service industry begin to build up a backlog of frustration and resentment about visitors, not just "jeepers and sometimes this pent up energy gets released in ways that are not very socially acceptable. There is no easy canned solution to this situation except for time to erase some of the memories of our recent mining past. The obvious big event for April is the Car Show. This relatively new event is growing by leaps and bounds and it is reported that this year will be no exception in upward grow th. Rod Petty and his club continue to reach higher and higher numbers of cars in attendance. Not to be overlooked in the April schedule are another couple of young events. The "Canyonlands Film Festival" will be in its third year and appears to be on its way to stability. Nicholas Brown, the event coordinator has brought the Moab Film Commission on board as a partner and has also enticed the College of Eastern Utah to give him some help. These partnerships will help the Festival continue to grow'. While not having nearly the visibility of a car show or a jeep safari, it hasn't been that many years since the Park City Film Festival could count the films being shown on the fingers of one hand. The same week as the Film Festival, Moab will host the "Tour of Canyonlands" Mountain bike races. This ev ent is expected to bring about 700 plus riders to town for 3 or 4 dav s These tv pes of races get significant exposure in the mountain bike magazines and Moab gets to enjoy a The County Council has given token approval to the recreation board to study some changes at the Spanish Trail Arena. These changes would include adding some ball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, area and some other yet to be determined "recreation" items. I had a look at the proposed plan recently and it appears that the new items are all being added at the expense of deleting or downgrading many of the existing facilities. If you are faced with a political pile of horse , and you try to cover it with perfume to make it smell better, about all you will get is perfumed horse . I am reminded of a former County Commissioners favorite saying: If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, don't try to tell me its a cow! bar-b-c- & Moab Happenings SUBSCRIPTION ORDER FORM Will you be coming to Moab again this year?!
