Friday, April 4 marks the beginning of the 1997 season and the opening ofthe historic village. Visitors may stroll the streets of the old pioneer town and enjoy the many quaint buildings, such as the new visitor center, bowery, Deseret News Building, Huntsman Hotel and Saloon, Pine Valley Chapel, and Heber East Ward School. Visitors on Saturday, April 5 may observe sheep shearing demonstrations throughout the day. Interpreters will demonstrate how pioneers sheared sheep by hand and how fleece was skirted and tied. Observe and learn how Utah pioneers created cloth from raw wool, through dying, carding, spinning and weaving. Throughout April to May 23, establish- Old Deseret Village will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 8.00 p.m. While buildings will not be open, there is no admission fee to stroll the streets of Old Deseret. Guided tours of the village are available and prices are $2.00 for adults, while children 11 and under and seniors 62 and over are $1.00. Horse-draw- n wagon rides will also be available May 1 at no charge to visitors. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, park hours will remain Tuesday through Saturday, 11.00 a m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays until 8:00 p.m. However, Old Deseret Village will become a live pioneer town with trained docents to interpret and demonstrate pioneer life in Utah as it was from 1847 to 1869. During this time, visitors to Old Deseret may tour the indi ments as village residents go about their daily chores and business. Pioneers will share their crafts, skills and stories of early Utah. Many special events have been scheduled, including lace making, quilting, and harvesting demonstrations, and Independence Day and Pioneer Day celebrations. Special activities for children, such as a pumpkin patch and carving day and pioneer childrens winter afternoon are also planned. Admission for Memorial Day through Labor Day will be $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 11 and under and seniors 62 and over. A family pass for two adults and four Or more children is $18 00 and groups of 10 or more are $2 00 per person. School groups are also $2.00 per student.
