"Usually the first guy out of the water is middle of the pack after the biking "Generally, the top three off the bike are around the top three in the event. The bike, a lot of the time, is where competitors make their move." The third leg in the triathlon is the 10 km run. At this point, the competition comes down to conditioning, stamina and sheer will. 'The longest leg of the race is the bike, proportionally, but the hardest is to get off that bike and start the run," Ricks said. 'Tour legs feel like lead." Many people just can't find it within themselves to finish a triathlon, but the Hill team has a good training program and experience on their side. Wieland, for instance, the team's top athlete, recently returned from the Armed Forces Triathlon. "Rob's more naturally talented than anyone I've ever met," Ricks said. "He trains hard and is just naturally talented. He's the best of us by a good distance." Given that a triathlon is primarily an individual sport, the team members will be unable to really do much to help each other once the gun goes off and the competitors begin to hit the water. Expectations vary for the team and for each competitor individually, but the Hill team is competitive with a few members expected to place in the top of their divisions. "As a team, I expect that well probably have SSgt. Ricks in the top five for his division," Davis said. "SSgt Wieland, if he has a good day, should place in the top three over-- by Steven R. Ford staff Hilltop Times 1 Summer usually brings out the fitness people, the runners and the bikers, but for the extreme athlete, it's triathlon season. And when the starting gun goes off June 18 for the Utah Summer Games Triathlon, a team from Hill AFB will be there. Bill Ricks, Rico Davis, Rob Wieland, Curt Pruden, Mel Graff and Phil Coumans decided to put together a team to represent the base at the state-wid-e competition. "The team was formed because we train together and we like to do these distance events," said Davis. "The reason we chose this one was because it sounded like a neat event, and we wanted to represent the base for the Utah Games." The men will begin in Quail Creek Reservoir, swimming 1.5 km. The swimming leg of the race is probably the easiest, being the first of the day and the shortest distance, but it also takes more endurance because all parts of the body are involved. It's fairly easy to train for the running and biking legs, but an open water swim isn't always possible, especially during the fall and winter months. "Most people are intimidated by the swim," Ricks said. "You swim nearly a mile in open water, and people are afraid that Jaws is going to get them or they'll drown. My goal in the water is not to give up too much time and stay in contention, then make it up on the bike and run." Once the team leaves the reservoir, the men will put on their gloves, pants, jersey and footwear for the 40 km bike' ride. Many of the team members, especially Ricks, are ..ivtg'g f, ,..V&a& 7T-:J- pros and elites, but I'd be surprised if we didn't have a couple of top ten finishes." According to Ricks, the team is still looking for competitors to help them represent Hill AFB at the competition. For those interested in the base triathlon team, contact TSgt. Davis at Ext.
