As one who has had tires punc— tured with nails in the past. I have always had my eyes open to anything that would slash a tire. This year I've retrieved seven rusty nails. Now. don‘t laugh! Yesterday I found a use for them. 5-. I Vick] Byrarn waits and watches as Ryan Peterson outfits her for snowboarding during recent event at Snowbasin. JaM series offers the brave a chance to challenge the sport By ROBB HICKEN Herald Staff Writer Lifestyle Editor SNOWBASIN Gnu, Hooger Booger, and Aggression are familiar names on ski slopes. but not among most skiers. They are well known to the latest brand of snowboarders, A colleague noted that when she was a young girl her father — a collector by nature not by occupa— tion — had her pound out bent nails so they could be used later on. "And all the while he had a sack of ‘straight’ nails just sitting there waiting to be used," she said. “I should send him my rusty nails," I offered, amused at her story. "At least they're straight." “Yes," she agreed. smiling, “All he would have to do is get some navel jelly to clean off the rust." It’s hard to fathom such a conservative nature, but I have seen both my husband and my dad straighten nails with a hammer. However, I can’t remember any of my sons doing it. And, in fact, I can’t even imagine them on a nailstraightening binge. There must be a generation gap here. Benjamin Franklin's axiom, "A penny saved is a penny earned" was oft—repeated at my house when I was growing up. And my husband apparently heard the same maxim. Several years ago he decided he was going to help the environment and at the same time make some money. so he started saving newspapers. It took him about six months, but he finally filled the car and took them in. “How much did you make?" I however. "It's not that bad now because everybody is using the same mountain and the same snow. You‘re just using a different tool." If one really takes austerity seriously. however. there are many ways to conserve. I had a friend who saved her husband’s zip-lock sandwich bags for re-use. I thought that was pretty radical but then she probably thought I was a bit balmy when I saved the lipstick in the bottom of the tubes to use with a lipstick brush. _We all have our pet austerity programs. But, as my son is want to remind me, “You guys save pennies and lose dollars." He is probably right. But it is much harder to save dollars and much easier to save pennies. And besides, the nice warm feeling one gets from conservation measures can’t be duplicated. 'Anyway that old sheet music may become valuable some day. A man from the Rexburg, Idaho area was remodeling his house and found two baseball trading cards — one of them a Babe Ruth — hidden in the fireplace wall. He sold them for more than $30,000 and paid off his house. 'On the other hand, my grand— mother saved every letter she had ever received. And since neither of her sons became president there wasn’t much use for them. It is doubtful that any of the family still have the letters. One of my husband‘s friends recently noted that his mother had died. And while things in her house were valuable to her they were of no value to anyone else. "They are just junk." he said.
