Jaylene will direct local volunteer efforts to educate Gunnison residents about the prevention of heart disease and stroke. Volunteers will also request contributions from their neighbors in support of the AHA’s research, education and community service programs. During the 1993 campaign, the AHA is emphasising the need for the public to become familiar with the early warning signals of a heart attack. The North Sanpete Chapter Future Homemakers of America participated in FHA region competition, Jan. 26. Eighth grade students at the Ephraim Middle School climaxed their studies in American government by visiting the Sanpete County Courthouse where they witnessed the court system in action. They then visited the State Capitol building in Salt Lake City. They also met with State Repre— sentative Mike Styler of Delta. and Senator Leonard Blackham of Moroni. who explained more fully about the constitution and government to the students. The eighth grade class also recently held its annual school History Fair. The theme was "Commu— nication in History: The Key to Understanding. ” Students wrote research papers, did historical projects and many were involved in media presenta— tions. In cooking, Esther Justesen. Missy Winona, Heather Carr. Peterson. a local parent who is very interested in children’s literature and drama. was the guest reader. He spent the entire day in the school reading to the students. Children were able to choose two books to be their own to read and keep. As an RIF school, Manti Elementary receives a grant to purchase children‘s books to be given away to students. The school raises 25 percent of the cost locally through PTA bake sales. This year the RIF committee, headed by Celeste Denton, ordered over 1,800 books to be given to students during three distribu— tions. to organize all available resources into an effective emergency opera— tions plan which is understood and exercised by everyone involved. Former Mt. Pleasant native. Dr. John Evan Jones, will receive an Outstanding Alumnus award from the College of Eastern Utah in Price. He will also break ground on the Price campus for a new residence hall named for his father, Aaron Jones, who was the president of the college from 1944 to 1959. This course introduces public officials, representatives of busi— ness and industry and leaders of civic and service organizations to the principles of emergency man— agement, including how to identify community hazards that potentially constitute a threat of disaster, and how to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from that hazard should the threat ever become 'a reality. Much of the course focuses upon how to organize the varying disaster activities of many different agencies. jurisdictions and organizations that would be involved in responding to a disaster, as well as the interface between the public and private sectors. Disaster preparedness on the local level is viewed as a management process, the goal of which is munity services. Lorna Bown of Fayette. and Cheryl Anderson of Gunnison have been appointed chairmen of the 1993 Door-to-Door campaign to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. Utah Chapter. The funds raised during the campaign will be used to serve Utahns with arthritis.
