"So all kinds of things will be published. and I’m sure some of them will be good research, and I‘m also sure that some of them won’t." But Young wants to list all of it in his bibliography and obtain much of it for his collection. “I want to include everything in print on or about the Dead Sea Scrolls, whether it‘s popular writing, or whether it‘s scholar- ly. technical. whatever it is." he said. “Even cartoons. Every- But Young expects a prolifera- thing from A to Z.” Many scholars believe there likely are more scrolls hidden in the caves near the Dead Sea. and that some documents that have been found are being held by speculators seeking the right market for their release. In an article in the January-February issue of Biblical Archaeology Review. Baruch Safrai argues. based on his personal experience in a 1953 expedition to the Cave of Letters, that more scrolls lie buried in the caves. And Harvard Professor John Strugnell said in an interview that he has seen at least one scroll fragment. and he knows there are others held by undisclosed parties who are waiting for the right terms to part with them. But anyone seeking to gain access to more scrolls — either by purchase or excavation — faces an expensive, time-consuming process that ulti— mately may prove futile, scholars said. “It’s not like walking into a cave, or even climbing into a cave and picking up a scroll," said Hershel Shanks. editor of the archaeology review. “Nothing’s lying on the surface."
