I knew I had to go there. How boring life would be if we all got so complacent we never tried anything new. Ariz.. you must first cross the Black Moun— tains. a dark and moody range with as many shadows and crags as a miner‘s weathered face. Oatman Road (old Route ()6) is an infamoUs hair-pinning careen of a cruise with narrow passes and steep cliffs that takes you to the edge of your seat and then sends you spiraling downward toward the floor of the Mojave Desert. which awaits just the burros who adapted to the wild. Japantown is essentially a five—acre mall. bounded by Post Street on the north. Laguna on the east. Geary on the south. and Fillmore on the west. Designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki. Japantown opened in 1968. The last two decades have not been kind to it. because more—recent advances in mall de— sign are not apparent here. Ar— chitecture critic Randolph Dele— hanty. perhaps tilting his nose in the air as he wrote. dismissed Japantown as “a period piece of sterile 19605 mall dcsrgn." In the work space within the oval. three Japa- nese chefs work ceaselessly, rolling sushi and loading their Kinokuniya bookstore. bigger than a basketball court. offering books. newspapers. magazines. audiocassetles and videotapes in Japanese and English. Ifyou can read Japanese. an irresistible creations onto small wooden boats. Between you and the chefs is a miniature canal. filled to capacity by boats linked up with chains. The boats. each about one foot long. revolve in perpetual motion. each loaded up with two small plates. each plate bearing two pieces ofsushi. Because of the chains. you can‘t pluck the boats out of the canal. But you can pick off whatever plate attracts you. and then merrily munch on the morsels. Pricing is ingeniously simple: The color of the plate determines what you pay. The price for two pieces of sushi ranges from a low of $1.20. up through $1.70 or $2.15. to atop of $2.50. You are not going to overextend your credit card at Isobune. - low brow attraction here is a gen— erous offering of the huge Japa— nese comic books. about the size ofa small-city telephone directoIf you are looking for books about World War II. they are filed in a section discreetly la- beled "Social Studies — Pacific War." The intent here is not re— visionist. however. since this section is no shrine to Hirohito and Tojo.‘ All the basic books by American and English historians about the U.S.—.lapanese conflict are here. —Downstairs around the cor— ner from Isuzu is Bonsai. where a charming selection of dwarfed trees is on sale. Most are juni— pcrs; all are less than 8 inches An easy way to judge the qual— ity of any ethnic restaurant is to look around and see how many ethnic people are there. To my right sat 14 consecutive Asians. To the left of my female compan- tall. Prices range from a low of $30 to a high of $55 each. As a conversation piece in your home or office. a bonsai tree would probably stir up as much conversation as a fish tank. and would proba— bly be easier to care for and maintain.
