(APP) attorneys have been asked to research the possibility of registering the Navajo name so that only the tribal government could use it for commercial purposes, Chairman Peter MacDonald said. Tribal officials are concerned about the growing number of private companies adding "Navajo" onto their names. "This may be confusing to some people, especially if the company is on the reservation, and leads them to believe it is either owned by the tribe or has some kind of affiliation," said Bill Riordan, an assistant attorney general for the tribe. "The Navajo Insurance Company is a good example," Riordan said. "Although it is a private company, its offices are in a tribally owned building, and some employees may think that it's part of the tribe." th5tW-L. .i I -- .! I M if raiT' ii I -- nn Jordan Meschkow, a Phoenix attorney who socializes in copyrights, patents and trademarks, thinks the tribe may have a difficult time proving its right to exclusive use of the name. "The tribe should have done this a long time ago," he said. The tribe may have waived its right to exclusive use of the name because it has allowed private companies to use it without objecting in the past. Riordan agreed that attempts to control use of the name off the reservation would be impossible. But he said the situation may be different on the reservation. It's possible, he said, that the Tribal Council could pass a resolution requiring tribal approval before any company on the reservation could use "Navajo" in its name. nMrm nail- J !if Hi 1 -- 1 1 5 ssW :3;S: in the Macy's 61st Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
