Kaufusi, who has put togetii-e- r half-a-wor- ld four impressive football games in a row, will join his teammates in the Melbourne Gridiron Bowl against Western Athletic Conference opponent Colorado State. The game will be played Saturday in Australia, but can be seen at 7 p.m. Friday on KUTV, the day before channel 2. After crossing the international dateline, the two teams are actually operating a day in Kaufusi, who is second on BYU's team in sacks behind David Futrell (9) at 5.5, and has 23 unassisted tackles, has scored the majority of his de- fensive points since the Hawaii game. Against Utah, Kaufusi had three tackles, recovered a fumble, deflected two passes and had one sack. His fumble recovery set up BYU's offense at the Utah d line. "Since the start of the season, I've had a lot of weight on and it has kind of slowed me up," said Kaufusi, who will be playing his final regular season game as a Cougar against the Rams. "As the season went on I felt more comfortable and I could carry my body weight. I got a lot of quickness back and started doing a lot better since the Hawaii game. And I haven't had to worry much about technique." Kaufusi's emergence on the line drew praise from head coach LaVell Edwards, who extolled Kaufusi's efforts the latter part of the season. "He's really starting to come into his own," said Edwards. four-yar- And speaking of coming into one's own, BYU needs to take CSU to: (a) have care of a 3 season, (b) get rid of a distraction en route to an im1-- 9-- portant an Bowl game Dec. 22 in Alabama (c) gain revenge for the Ram upset in 1986 wherein CSU knocked BYU out the WAC title, Steve Bartolo set a WAC rushing record in Provo, and Steve Lindsley threw a famous interception that may have change the way plays are called at BYU each time it gets inside the 20. In CSU, BYU is facing a team that has only beaten New Mexico. The Rams, who have shifted to a passing game, are in league play, just where they were predicted to be by the writers and coaches last July. Those passes may give BYU a chance to improve on its 6 national ?4 31-m- an as the team. The Cougars set a school record with 28 interceptions through the Utah game. BYU will be playing without . Bob Jensen, who replaced Covey and led BYU to the winning field goal in the fourth quarter, will be the backup. BYU currently is tied for second with New Mexico State and Baylor for fumble recoveries in a season with 22. The Cougars have not set any offensive marks this year. Brooks and her guide trailed the wounded bear for three hours in the dense trees. "It was the most exciting and tense part of the hunt. The bushes were very thick and we were never sure where the bear was. The bear can travel 40 yards in two seconds, they are actually faster than a horse at short distances. Knowing that makes hunting in dense bushes an exciting and unpredictable experience." The bear was cunning and actually doubled back on its own trail, but according to Brooks, Runyon was careful and experienced enough to find the bear before it found them. After downing the bear, Brooks had the guide skin the animal and pack the hide out. The prize is now being mounted in a full standing position. When finished, the massive Kodiak mount will tower 11 feet high, a fitting statue to the bear's size and prominence. Connie and her husband Randy are owners of Barnes Bullets in American Fork. Their operation manufactures a premium line of hunting bullets and is credited as being the oldest bullet component operation in America. Besides manufacturing their high quality line of bullets, they do prototype work for companies including Remington and Winchester. They also build custom rifles. Randy said one custom rifle they are working on now may go for as much as $15,000. The rifle Connie used was one of their creations with special features including a fiberglass stock, ideal for lightweight packing, and a recoil arrestor. The innovative recoil arrestor changes the kick of her 375 H & H closer to the recoil of a 30.06 rifle. Two days after shooting the Kodiak bear she also took a Sitka blacktail deer with the same rifle. Part of her hunting trip was to test a new bullet. Their new Barnes (X) bullet, which she tested, is the first major bullet innovation to come in 30 years. She said the intent of the new bullet is to maintain its weight through impact. Present bullets lose much of their weight and consequently efficiency is also lost. Both Connie and Randy are avid hunters and testers of their products. Randy hunts an estimated much as 34 before Providence closed the margin toward the end of the game as Utah cleared its bench. (AP) Wyoming basketball coach Benny Dees says his team does have some weaknesses, but they were hardly in evidence as the Cowboys devas8 Wednestated Colorado, day night. BYU (2-- 0) at Wash St 100-6- (1-- 1) Colorado basketball Coach Tom Miller summed up the Buffs' loss to Wyoming succinctly: "They can rebound, they shoot, they pass, they pressure. Anything, you name it, they can do it." And Wyoming did, before a crowd of 10,199, more than half of them Wyoming fans. The win boosted Wyoming to 0 as Colorado fell to "I'd like to play a Tom Miller team when he had some talent," said Wyoming Coach Benny Dees. "He's a little 2-- 2. short-hande- d right now. It's the first time our seniors have won down here so we're really happy about it. "We're not a great rebounding team, and we foul too much. I don't think we belong in the top 10 yet. I'd rather earn it than to be there and be knocked out." But Miller doesn't suspect Wyoming will be knocked out anytime soon. "They have a lot of similarities to the (national champion) 1976 Indiana team I spent time around," the CU coach said. "They have great firepower and unselfishness, and they play together so well." "They're tough out here but we came out fired up," said Fennis Dembo, who scored 19 points in the Wyoming attack. It's a lot of fun when we play fast and we have to keep it up." Since then, he's learned to shoot, too. Miller, a freshman guard at Pitt, made all six of his shots and finished with 20 points as the No. 4 Panthers 0 beat St. Francis, Pa., Wednesday night in college basketball. "Sean is a tremendous shooter. He has the green light from me to shoot any time he wants to, as long as he is comfortable with the shot," Pitt Coach Paul Evans said. "He's the most poised fresh 88-7- man I've ever recruited." Miller tied a school record for making three in each half. He also had seven assists while playing only 22 minutes. Miller always handled the ball well. He was such a whiz in junior high that he earned a trip from his home in Beaver Falls, Pa., to Burbank, Calif., for an appearance with Johnny Carson.
