Show Sunday. May 25, - Page THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 1986 17 Celtics Rate Edge Over Houston in NBA Showdown By FREDERICK WATERMAN the game's premier playoff t'PI Sporti Writer The NBA Championship series begins Monday at 1 p.m. MST with Houston at the Boston Celtics. The game will be televised on KSL Channel 5 locally. .Here is how the two teams match up against each other. Frontcourt Boston has size and experience; Houston has size and youth. The Celtics' combined regular-seaso- n and playoff record of 6 is primarily because of their frontline. Seven-footer- s Robert Parish and Bill Walton, Kevin McHale and 9 Larry Bird wear down opponents. What the Rockets' front-cougives up in experience it makes up for in athletic ability. The Twin Towers of 0 Akeem Olajuwon and 4 Ralph Sampson, ji plus 8 small forward Rodney are much quicker than the Cfckics' big men. McCray is and a good ballhandler; a seund defensive player he is expected to draw Bird. Olajuwon, fitCa 23.5 points per game aver-a-g ja the regular season, was too physical for the Lakers. Parish can be worn down, but Walton is there fir relief. Bird averaged 33.5 ppg in two games against Houston this year. '. Even. Edge I Backcourt Lewis Lloyd is a streak shooter, but he and Robert Reid hit the long jumpers against the Lakers; they will have to do so against the Celtics to prevent the defense from sagging on the big men. Reserve guard Mitchell Wiggins is an explosive scorer, capable of scoring 20 off the bench. Houston lacks the smooth ballhandler who can penetrate but has yet to be hurt by the midseason loss of John Lucas to drugs. However, the lack of a Veteran in the backcourt can be exploited by superior defenders like Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson. Ainge's confidence is rising and his play shows it; he's averaging 16.1 ppg in the playoffs, more than 7 above his career average. Johnson, a pro, is one of . 78-1- 6-- 6-- rt ers. Probably the most meaningful Edge Both teams are creations of Coach Bill Fitch, who moved from Boston to Houston three years ago. These are teams that work the ball to the big men and use the guards as a second option. Houston averaged 114.4 ppg during the season and Boston 114.1. The Celtics shot 51 percent to 49 percent for the Rockets. The Celtics are the best passing team in the NBA with Bird's teammates following his example. Boston has exceptional ball movement. Houston is not as creative, though Sampson and Olajuvan can be fast-breaki- defensive statistic is opponents' percentage, and Boston led the league at 46 percent and were third in average points allowed at 104.7. Collins, 34, becomes the youngest coach in the NBA after agreeing to contract. He will be a three-yepaid $225,000 in each of the first two years with an option for a third, team officials said. Collins, who has no prior experience, replaces Stan Albeck, who was fired earlier this 2 week after a record in his first year with the Bulls. "I'm not going to make an evaluation of what Stan did. All I want to do is win with this franchise," said Collins, currently a color commentator for CBS. The former Illinois State defended his lack of coaching experience, saying, "I think as an assistant in college (Pennsylvania and Arizona State) I received valuable experience. in addition, as a commentator, I was in a position to size up teams and actually coach both while 1 was in the broadcast booth." Collins also said he considers himself a hometown fan of the Bulls. "I went to Illinois State, 1 grew up watching the Bulls ... 1 think they have a great opportunity to do well here," Collins told reporters when he arrived in Chicago Thursday night. Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf said Collins will last longer with the team than previous coaches. "We think we could have a coach for the next 10 years," said Reinsdorf, who fired Albeck over philosophical differences concerning the way the team should be playing. "Doug is a bright, intelligent young man who can become one of the best young coaches in the league." WE take his shot. Allen Leavell can a help or hindrance, despite his seven years in the league is usefulness is still unpredictable. Boston. Edge Intangibles The Celtics and Rockets finished Nos. 1 and 2 in best home record. Boston compiled an NBA record 40-mark at the Boston Garden while Houston was 36-- 5 at the The Summit. However, Houston was 6 on the road compared to the 4 Celtics' which also tied the league's best mark away from home. The Celtics won both games e in a series against Houston this season. sharp-shootin- rUTURE H Choice of CHICAGO (UPI) Jimmy Rodders for much of the strategy adjustments during a game. Houston. Edge Bench g Boston has lost reserve forward Scott Wedman for at least part of the finals because of two broken ribs. Walton won the league's Sixth Man Award and can provide moments of brilliance, but can't play long stretches. Jerry Sichting is Boston's third guard e and a specialist, the other four subs all are role players who can contribute. Houston forward Jim Petersen played well GUARANTEE WE STAND BEHIND EVERYTHING the ability to be in the right plate at the right tune, is an excellml jumper and will not hesitate 4$ relies upon assistant coach ML Mc-Ci-j- IBulls He col- lected 67 percent. McHale is on the NBA s first team, Boston's other four starters and Walton are in the same class. Boston Edge Coaches Fitch has built two teams into championship contenders and he knows Boston as well as any coach in the league. Fitch, a good tactician, always is well prepared. He was nicknamed Captain Video by the Celtics for his devotion to game films. A former assistant to Fitch in Boston, Celtics coach K.C. Jones's strength is his calm, approach and the confidence he communicates to his players. His use of timeouts and rotation of reserves has improved. 226-255- 6 in i |
