Dear (601) IJ 2 Ann Landers purpose of an honorary degree is to give special recognition to individuals who have distinguished themselves in some way. I recognize that a four- - or five-yedegree program, successfully completed, deserves a certain amount of respect, but what about the person who has spent a lifetime in research or devoted him or herself to serving humanity? If an honorary degree is given as recopnit i for achieven and misment, why is n leading" for him to i ;e that title? Perhaps I fail to understand the purpose of honorary degrees. If so. set me straight. E.G. ar Dear E.G.: Where did you get the idea that my attitude toward honorary degrees is negative? As a recipient of several, I can tell you I was delighted to receive each and every one. I feel that those who are presented with honorary docto- rates as a symbol of recognition ought not use the title "Dr." onct the academic ceremonies are completed. The permanent use of the title tends to be deceptive and this is what I am against. Dear Ann Landers: It took me eight months to write this letter, but here I am. We have yanked our kids out of dozens of schools, taken jobs to make ends meet and quit on short notice to move on to another post. We were proud to be part of the military and grateful for the fascinating experiences, but now we need your advice. How do we live with these civilians? Since they no longer have anyone to order around, we have become their scapegoats. Not only do we suffer mental abuse, but several of us have been subjected to slapping, slugging and undeserved shoving around. We need your help, Ann. The military has no pamphlets or briefing on this subject. If any retired military wife out there understands the problem and can tell us what to do we would be eternally grateful. General Sherman said, "War is hell." Well, so is living with a retired military man who can't adjust to civilian life. (P.S. Don't suggest employment. They've looked and there J. And M. isn't any around.) Dear J. and M.: First, no woman should tolerate physical abuse, whether her husband is a retired military man or not. Second, boredom is undoubtedly part of the problem. Check the opportunities for voluntary service for both your husbands and yourselves. If there's a veterans' hospital In the vicinity, some extra hands will be welcome. The child was only in perfect health three days old and beautiful. Are women who do this sort of thing crazy? Are they heartless? What on earth can be done to put an end to such mindless behavior? Last month an infant boy was left on the steps of a church. Two months earlier a week-olgirl was found in a shopping cart behind a supermarket. Attached to the little blue blanket was a note; "Be good to my baby. Sorry to do this but she deserves more than I can give her." May I borrow your space to say a few words to women and young girls who give birth to children they cannot or do not want to take care of?
