Show SI NDAY, August 12. hroud of T urin Da fa Aids in By STEVE DIFFENBACHER The La Grtode Obierver SUMMERVILLE, Ore. iUPI -A glow of peace lights up his face, but it is his mangled body which arrests the eye. He has just told the thief on his right, ''Today, thou shalt be with me in paradise." As he speaks, blood drops from vicious wounds on his chest and arms. More blood flows down his face into a beard slightly split in the middle. Swelling has nearly closed his left eye, and his nose is broken. A cap of thorns has gouged deep cuts on his bruised head, while his stomach hangs limply, like an empty burlap bag. The sky beyond is troubled, radiant. To some, the scene may seem gruesome, admits painter Tom Noy. To others, it may be an uplifting spiritual experience as they contemplate the transcendence of Christ's suffering on the cross. For Noy, 36, the scene has been a scientific, historical and spiritual quest. "It's not necessarily a pretty picture, because it wasn't a pretty event. But I consider this to be one of the most inspiring moments in human history," Noy said. For two years, the Summerville inches tall, weighing 175 pounds. Zugibe, a forensic expert at Columbia University in New York, has reconstructed Jesus' size and final condition in star- ingly how it got there In the meantime, scholars have shown that the image corresponds closely with descriptions of Jesus' torments in the four gospels In a few cases, it has seemed to amplify them. tling detail through intensive study of the shroud, an ancient burial garment that shows the front and back images of a man who apparently was crucified. Many people believe that man is Jesus Christ. For instance, most crucifixion paintings show Jesus with nails through his palms. For the nails to hold up Jesus' body, they would have to be driven through a n gap between the bones of the wTist and the palm. The spot is something only practicing Roman executioners would know, Noy said. On the shroud, the nail holes are shown in their correct posi- S ii o I' t 1 k I) A S tion. The cloth image also backs up the scriptural claim that Jesus' 0 . 1. n nou enhanced studies of the head image on the shroud. In the process of researching the pamtmg, Noy said he gained a deep respect for Jesus as a physical and spiritual phenomenon. I don t think I could have made it through the first 20 lashes, yet the shroud indicates Jesus may have suffered 120 during the scourging," Nov said. "It's a miracle he got to the execution site." common in New Testament times. Noy reproduced these details as faithfully as possible. His artistic interpretation shows the scourge marks, the facial cuts, bruises and cap of thorns as seen bv the thief on Christ's right. Noy also depicted the distended stomach and blood flows as thev are represented on the shroud". The face was based on computer- - 3 t I something which has eluded artists throughout history an accurate painting of the crucified Christ. Partially basing his work on current research surrounding the famed Shroud of Turin, Noy has spent hours consulting by letter and phone with Dr. Frederick Zugibe, a noted expert on the shroud. The result of that research is a oil painting, showing Jesus in the final stages of his execution by Roman soldiers. Noy depicts Christ as a 9- slender, muscular man, K Noy said he tried to give Jesus' face a mixture of serenity and agony without turning the paintvision ing into a Hollywood-styl- e of glory. Nov has been fascinated with the story of Christ's final moments for more than 20 years. He siiil has a crucifixion scene he did at age 16, depicting an ashen Christ surrounded by a dark, menacing sky. Noy lives on a wooded homestead between Elgin and Summerville, where he paints for an art gallery in Los Angeles and writes screenplays. He admits the crucifixion project has markedly affected his views about Christ as a historical being. He believes the shroud is genuine. For him, it is persuasive evidence that Jesus was a man of flesh and blood, not simply a legend. "From my own perspective, after having researched the shroud, I feel the man had supernatural powers of endurance," Noy said. "This project helped make his existence real for me." t.i. l (.1 u I n s r I) a v II Save 100 on Torn" For all the mowings still left in your lawn save 100 now on a quality Torn' with rear bagging and power drive d, Tapes Show Soviet Arms Delivered to Guerrillas -that WASHINGTON (UPI) Army intelligence officials say by shrimp boats, canoes and pack mule trains, Soviet-blo- c arms are flowing from Cuba and Nicaragua to leftist guerrillas in El Salvador. 0 spy aircraft, flying at night along El Salvador's Pacific coast near Honduras, recorded on tapes outlines of boats unloading apparent caches d of arms and supplies on canoes. Numerous "hot spots" on the bands of guerrillas tapes greeted the canoes on the beaches and loaded the cargo onto mule trains that worked their way into the interior. Gen. Paul Gorman, commander of the U.S. Southern Command based in Panama, told reporters that declassified intelligence supports the administration's charge that the Soviet bloc, Cuba and Nicaragua are funneling arms and supplies to the leftist guerrillas in El Salvador. The guerrillas say they operate on U.S. arms captured from or surrendered by Salvadoran forces. "The guerrilla front is ludicrous in insisting that it gets no ordance from abroad," the four-sta- r general said. "External support for the guerrillas continues to be a mainstay of the guerrillas." Gorman and Thomas Pickering, the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, appealed to Congress to approve an extra $117 million in military aid for President Jose Napoleon Duarte's government this year. "A guerrilla offensive is imminent," Gorman said. "The insurgents are determined to damage Duarte's prospects by any means at their disposal and they possess the means for much bloodshed and destruction."
