The annual competition, sponsored by the Utah County Farm Bureau, is open to men 16 years and older only, and not surpris- , features meat as the major barbecue item. ingly Contestants must not be employed by the Farm Bureau or an affiliated company. Prizes will be awarded in each of four categories, and the overall winner will be named Cookout King. The categories are: pork, beef, lamb and poultry, which includes turkey. A showmanship award will also be given, and many entrants in the past have used such elaborate trappings as chuckwagons, dry ice volcanos, French restaurant decor and Hawaiian luau settings to enhance their presentations. Others use more simple table settings and side dishes, and prefer to focus on the meat preparation. All winners of the county contest may enter the state competition, which is part of the Utah State Fair. To be eligible for the state finals, a participant must be registered with a County Farm Bureau and must have been judged a winner of a county or local contest. Farm Bureau membership, however, is not required. The contestant must enter the same category he entered in the local contest, and he must furnish his own meat and equipment, including barbecue grill, table, and serving utensils and plates. Meat product must be cooked completely at the cookout, although processed meat such as smoked ham is acceptable. To register, fill out and enter the application form printed in the Fair Book, or contact the Utah County Farm Bureau at or the Utah County Fair extension 363. A county winner, Myron Walker of Orem, last year took his winning oriental chicken and became cookout king and showmanship winner in Utah State Fair competition.
