Show Friday. Today Is in Michael Jackson's 'Thriller"video, yet he says he's a "director kind of person." Lokey, who is in the newlv released break dance movie, "Breakin'," is in Provo to direct Lex de Azev-edo- 's latest Mormon musical, "Charly." In an interview, Lokey said though he's known in professional circles as a dancer, he is moving towards directing, acting and choreography. "I'm of person a director-kin- d rather than a performer-typ- e of person." "Charly" will open at the Academy Square Theater tonight at 8 p.m. Lokey said he can be recognized in the dance practice scenes of "The Making of Thriller." "I'm right behind Michael to the right." Lokey said Jackson is "a very sweet person," "a dynamic performer," who is "just as shy as he appears to be." Director - The video was filmed "very fast" at night, he said. The dancers wore the simplest make-uof all the cast, yet it p took one and a half hours to After rehearsing for only two days, filming began at 5 p.m. and lasted through the night until sunrise, with the dancers performing on cement. Lokey brings extensive experience in theater to the Academy Square stage. He has danced in Broadway and Los Angeles productions of '"A Chorus Line," in Las Vegas and in with Slyvester Stallone's film Alive" with John Travolta. He has also taught dance classes to the likes of Olivia Newton-JohCheryl Ladd, Juliet Prowse and Ben Verdeen. Lokey choreographed a segment of Ms. Newton-John'- s "Physical" video. While Lokey adapted Jack Weyland's book "Charly" for the stage, he said he tried to stay as close to the book as possible. "It's too good to mess with." He said he had to fill in some gaps in the story and create scenes with dialogue. Lokey 23 7, Are Soap Operas Also a "Staying 1 1 - Page family, food, fashion put it on. This isn't the first time de Azevedo and Lokey have worked together. Lokey di- rected a California and a Utah production of "Saturday's Warriors," a play which he says is "very different" than this one. "Saturday's Warriors" was basically a play about conflict in Mormon life," Lokey says. " Charly "is a play about rela- tionships where the people happen to be Mormons." It was de Azevedo and Lokey's professional relationship that brought him back to Utah, a state where he received a BFA degree in dance choreography, and his MFA in theater directing from the University of Utah. He also spent five years in Salt Lake as a principle dancer with Ballet West. But Provo is certainly a long way from 'he bright lights of Broadway or even the Vegas strip. In the quiet of the theater before a final rehearsal, Lokey talked about the hustle and bustle of the professional world. The high pressure competition is missing here, he said, and he finds a slower tempo. "But there is a sweetness, love and concern here that might be missing in other Type' places," he said. "But theater people are basically the same everywhere. It is a giving, sharing work." Facilities in Provo are different too. The Academy Square Theater is very small, he said. The stage had to be doubled and the lighting system imported. There is no wing space, so changing props has been difficult. "We've literally been going through birth pains," Lokey said. 'But we feel " Charly" has the poten- tial. It's worth the effort. said they plan for in Provo for several months before taking it to the Salt Lake area. Response to the preview performances has been "exceedingly good," he said. Lokey will soon be back in e that environment. In July he will be teaching dance in Hawaii, then he is off to Munich, Germany, then Paris, where he will be directing a video. "This year has been a turning point for me." he said. EvLokey "Charly" to play high-pressur- erything is happening at once.'" At the same time Charly,"' is opening, Lokey's film Breakin" is being released withhis first role, and he is directing his first film. " " A Great Escape? Dear Ann Landers: This is for that reader who said soap operas were a "great escape."' 1 always have thought they catered to morons and after reading this column in the Las Vegas Sun, I'm sure I was right. Please print it, Ann. It says a great deal not only about the I Q but the taste of Nepeople in this country. vada Philosopher Dear Phil.: I will, indeed, with a credit to the author, Paul Price. His column is called "Dateline Las Vegas." For reasons that escape me, I have been reading the resumes of the dire events that dramatize life on the TV soaps. Here are some samples: Edge of Night: Eric approached Chris. Sbe pushed him and he died, impaled on a pitchfork. There were no witnesses. Another World: Realizing that his uncle planned to name Sally as Kevin's trustee, Davis proposed to her, then suffocated the old man with a pillow. Days of Our Lives: Tony tries to give Marlena the poison capsule but fails. d Ann Landers As The World Turns: ard agrees to burn The Search For Tomorrow: is raped by Jack, who forced his way into her bedroom and escaped unnoticed. Texas: Ginny tells Barret she's pregnant and he is elated. He doesn't realize it's not his baby. Chris plans to release Paige's porno unless she gives him cash. Rikki knocks out Billy Joe. All My Children: Liza recovers from being beaten by Bud. Ryan's Hope: Roger starts to attack Maggie and has to be stopped by Frank. Frank comforts Maggie and kisses her passionately. Jacqueline offers Laslow cash if he will impregnate her. Sunny j Grant General Hospital: leaps out of the bushes and strangles Campbell. Dear Readers: Before you conclude that the average American housewife is an airhead, I'd like you to know that a surprising number of men are daily viewers of the soaps, and they are just as hooked as the women. Have a good day, unless you have other plans. Dear Ann Landers: My daughter-in-latakes antibiotics whenever she gets a sniffle. I've told her this is foolish, but I can't tell her why. Can Bad-Ax- e Mom you? Dear Axe: People who overdose on antibiotics kill off the susceptible bacteria. Strains of Guiding Light: Beth tells HO y Children's Home and leaves an unconscious Margo to die in the fire. Craig tries to rescue Margo but is waylaid by Richard. Another Life: Lance escapes from prison and talks Paula into helping him find Russ. Felix spots Dave and shoots him. Search for Tomorrow: A wounded Brian shoots his attacker to death. A young girl races out the door. Warren congratulates himself for staying married to Suzy, who is now $2 million richer. Lillian about Bradley raping her.
