Friday, Animals need help too during flooding. The Humane Society of Utah is concerned about animals that may be victimized by high spring runoff, as many were last year, particularly along the Jordan River and south Salt Lake County. The society advises livestock and pet owners to be prepared this month to prevent discomfort or drowning in flood id pastures and other feeding areas. "Flooding is a problem for animals when there is no dry area for them to lay down, or when they get mired in the mud, or a streambank collapses when they are standing on it," said John Fox, chief investigator for the Humane Society. Hoofed animals that stand in water for a prolonged period can develop hoof problems, Fox warned. The animals' hooves begin rotting and develop infections. He reported some flooding in fields around the northwest corner of Utah Lake, and livestock owners in the area have been digging ditches for drainage. ' Most people are aware of the problems this year because it happened last year," Fox said. Unfortunately, he added, some people check on their corralled animals only once a month. "A good animal owner checks once a day," he said. Flans should be made well in advance to provide alternate pastures or corralled areas if existing feeding areas are in flood areas. Owners are urged to ensure that adequate amounts of dry ground, feed and potable water are available and accessible to - animals daily. Supplemental feed should be placed at higher hi half-doze- " " ' .in UU .v1 ground. Officials said Wednesday the case began when the boy, whose name has been withheld because of his age, began representing himself as the president of Marketing Associates Inc., a bogus company. He sent letters to firms asking about various products and as months passed his name was entered on financial mailing lists. More - Voters But Fewer Votes WASHINGTON The (UPI) population is expected to reach 174 million by November, a increase of nearly 10 million since the 1980 election, the Census Bureau says. The bureau also said Wednesday women of voting age outnumber men by 8 million and are a majority in all but four states Alaska, Hawaii, Texas and Wyoming. The figures are of special interest this year because of a pervoting-ag- e ceived "gender gap" between men and women voters. Some women's groups have charged that President Reagan's cuts in social services and his other policies affecting women will mean fewer female votes for him this November. Polls also indicate that men are more likely than women to favor Reagan and that women are more likely to support Democrats. Census figures show women represent just over 52 percent of the voting-ag- e population and that their proportion increases among older groups. Men hold a majority, 50.5 percent, among those 18 to 24, but women have a slight edge in the 4 age group, predominate with 52 percent in the 4 age group and represent a 25-4- 45-6- hefty percent among those 60 over 65. The bureau said the voting-ag- e population is expected to reach 174 million by November, an increase of nearly 10 million since the last presidential election. Most of the increase is among 4 people in the age group, "which experienced a dramatic increase of 9.5 million," and now comprises 42 percent of potential voters. In addition, the over-6- 5 popula 25-4- tion grew more than 10 percent and includes 16.2 percent of the people eligible to vote. But there are fewer year olds this year than in 1982. "For the first time, the number of young adults is beginning to decline as the baby boom generation ages," the bureau said. "The group is estimated to lose nearly 1 million between the 1982 and 1984 elections, decreasing to 29 million and lowering its share of the voting-ag- e population to 17 18-2- 4 The bureau noted that the proportion of people who vote has decreased steadily since 1960 even though the actual number of voters has increased because of population growth. "Over 86 million persons or 52,6 percent voted for president in 1980," the bureau said, "and if the same proportion votes in 1984, nearly 92 million votes will be cast." Minnesota, percent." The number of potential black voters has increased by 2 million since 1980 for a total of 19 million or 11 percent of the national electorate. While blacks traditionally have had a lower voting rate than whites, Jesse Jackson's candidacy this year has sparked new interest that may bring more blacks to the polls in November. the home state of Democratic presidential candi- date Walter Mondale, is the only state that had a voter turnout of 70 percent or more in both 1976 and 1980.
