Show Friday. UTC Housing ' 'Adequate SOXES According to Orem Study By CLARK H. CARAS Herald Staff Writer Despite projected expansion of Utah Technical College and increased enrollment, there may already be adequate student housing in Orem, according to a report submitted by Jim Wilber, senior planner for the city. Wilber said the conclusion was drawn after looking at the number of multiple dwelling units and discussing vacancy problems with Provo City. Two months ago the Orem City Council commissioned Wilber's office to prepare a study addressing the issue of student housing in the city. The report presented Tuesday points out eight possible site locations, zoning and master plan changes needed and conclusions and recommendations. ! "President Higbee said he believes there is a need now be- cause are enrolled 1.550-1,60- 0 from outside of Utah County now. But Higbee said this ratio will decline as the Tech changes," said Wilber. Figures in the study show enrollment at UTech is 5,715 with 74 percent from Utah County. It is estimated enrollment could increase by 10 percent a year over the next 10 years, according to the report, with a population of 10,000 students by 1994. "It is believed that even at that number 85 percent of the students will be from Utah County. That means the neei for housing will remain at a con-'an- t with married stu UTC ' ' Utah Technical College re lt 10,-00- Friends Association will sponsor the Wasatch Auto Expo, a show of antique, hot rod, custom and specialty cars from throughout the West, Aug. 18. The area south of the campus and across 1300 S. are zoned for highway services, he said. "If they really do go ahead someday and build the mini-SaPalace project, we might be better off to set that area aside for commercial development," said Wilber. The report listed seven conclusions drawn from the study: FriendsAlumni Schedule Auto Expo at ProvoOrem's Alumni and - Page areas north of the college would be impacting on residential neighborhoods. That area also represents some of the most expensive dents needing more than singles," said Wilber. No housing could be located on campus because of state policy and because UTech needs all of its land to expand, according to Wilber. "They are looking into a project using solicited funds to build a mini-Sa0 Palace that could seat up to people. Higbee claims there is a need for this because the Marriott Center is hard to book sometimes," said Wilber. To meet the expanded growth at the Tech 500,000 more square feet must be added to the campus at a cost of $40-5- 2 million, according to the report. According to a census taken in Orem, there are 4,470 housing units in the southwest section of the city. Wilber indicated this represents 30 percent of the housing units in Orem with 1,600 multiple units in that section of the city. The eight areas identified as potential sites for student housing are 1300 S. Sandhill Road, on the west side of the road; 1300 S. Sandhill Road, on the east side of the road; land along 1200 S.; a parcel ot land at 800 S. and 1200 W.; 800 S. and 800 W.; a strip of land at 800 S.; 800 S. and 400 W.; and 1200 S. All the zoning would have to be amended and the master plan changed in the eight areas in order to allow the building of student housing, according to Wilber. And there are problems with many of the areas, he said. "The joint-ventu- THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, May 11. 1984 GREAT COMPAMON PHONE YOU CAN USE ON YOUR PATIO!
