May 11. 1984 Judge Denies Delay In Causeway Hearing SALT LAKE CITY (ITPIl A federal judge has refused to delay a May 18 hearing for a suit challenging the state's plan to breach the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway to relieve flooding Great Salt Lake. The causeway spanning the lake dams the lake's south end, permitting water to rise above the level of Interstate 80 on the south shore. The breach would lower the south end by about nine inches. Great Salt Lake Minerals Co. on the opposes the breach, saying it would flood the mineral-ricnorth end with fresh water and ruin its business. It filed suit to try to stop the breach project. Spiders balloon out of crop fields at the end of the growing season and by the time they return to the fields the number of pests has increased and become well established. "That's why we're studying the spider's ballooning habit," said Greenstone. "We think we might some day be able to modify spiders' behavior so they won't balloon and leave fields." The most common spider found in crops are the sheet web weavers that lurk beneath their webs and wait for an unsuspecting insect to be trapped in the guy wires that hold the web in place. Greenstone said sheet web spiders are important in controlling rice pests in such countries as the Philippines. Greenstone said his favorite is jumping spiders. "They are the most spectacular of the hunters," he said. "They don't make a web. They get their prey by jumping on it.
