Vice President Orem Chamber of Commerce On Feb. 24. the Orem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors adopted a resolution calling for enactment by the U.S. Congress of the Fair Trade in Steel Act of 1984 which would limit imports of foreign steel to 15 percent of the domestic market for a period of five years. It has offices in Provo, Baker, Ore. and Oklahoma Information given to the board of directors states that our Utah steel industry, centered at the Geneva Plant, continues to be assaulted by a flood of heavily subsidized steel from all over the world, including a number of Third World countries who are willing to subsidize steel in order to obtain hard American currency. In fact, foreign steel this year will claim as much as 50 percent or more of the total market in the western states, the region our Geneva Plant must serve if it is to survive and grow over the years ahead. The impact of this trend on our domestic industry in the West over many years had City, Okla. Parker said the firm has already added a complete new management team and plans to diversify and broaden its base of operations, "Our industrial and commercial refuse container division, established several months ago, has already achieved an annual sales level of over $1 million," Parker noted. "Sales in our industrial tubing division are expanding rapidly... We will be manufacturing and marketing the most efficient stoves on the market in time for this year's fall sales." Numerous operations have closed down entirely and our local industry has suffered layoffs, a lack of investment to modernize and expand and the loss of job opportunities for our young people. The legislation we have supported would not prohibit imports or eliminate competition for foreign suppliers or force an increase in steel prices, according to our associates at Geneva. In fact, it would allow a higher level of imports into our country than every other steel producing nation allows into their own countries. Moreover, the quotas it sets forth would be imposed for five years only. And cash flow generated by steel operations during those five years would have to be reinvested to modernize our domestic industry and make it more competitive. In brief, this legislation would give our Utah steel industry the breathing room it needs to achieve a stronger position in the future. The resolution adopted by the Orem Chamber of Commerce recognizes that this measure is a reasonable approach that merits our support. 1960 1961.
