Designated as official from the People's Republic of China, the performers will make their only other stop in Utah on their way home from the October 1982 Grand Opening Festivities at Walt Disney World's EPCOT - World Showcase in Orlando, Fla. The group will visit Utah as guests of BYU's College of Fine Arts and Communications. Founded in 1979, the Shanghai Song and Dance Company was originally a small performing group attached to the Shanghai Municipal Dance School. It has rapidly expanded since then to a full professional company totaling more than 200 performers, musicians and techni- cians. Members of the ensemble began their association with BYU in the summer of 1979, when the Young Ambassadors, a BYU music performing group, visited with the ensemble in its Shanghai studio. "They put on a full performance for us that day, right in their studio, and it was the beginning of a friendship between the Chinese performers and the BYU performing groups," says Randy Boothe, director of the Young Ambassadors who, as a consultant to Disney for the EPCOT - World Showcase, was instrumental in the Chinese ensemble's invitation to Disney World. Since 1979, China has been hosts of four other tours by BYU performing groups, including the International Folk Dancers and the Lamanite Generation, as well as the Ambassadors. Young Hundreds of millions of Chinese people have viewed performances by the BYU groups on China Central Television. After observing a performance by the BYU International Folk Dancers in Shanghai in 1981, the company sent its two lead dancers with the BYU group on the remainder of its China tour.
