Show T.:rl3V. Gil more Makes Seek To Stop Union NFL Will Spurs Stronger By FRED DOWN UPI Sporti Writer The season is likely to be remembered by five of the six teams in the National Basketball Association's Midwest Division as "the year of the revoltin develop1982-8- 3 ment." The development was that the San Antonio Spurs acquired a center and the Houston Rockets lost one. In short, the acquisition of Artis d Gilmore, center, adds a new dimension to the Spurs' already intimidating offense while the Rockets' loss of Moses Malone, two-tim- e NBA Most Valuable Player, to the Philadelphia 76ers means that the second-plac- e team (tied with Denver) of last season has been weakened. Nothing else that happened duris likely to have ing the anywhere near the effect of those two moves. This is likely to be the most unbalanced of the NBA's division?. The Spurs won the division by two games with tba Kansas City Kings and Rockets tied for second and the others strung out, order, Kansas City, Dallas and Utah. None of the trailing three managed to play even .400 ball and none appears to have been strengthened enough to be a formidable contender. So the most likely challengers were weakened by the loss of Malone while the Spurs seem improved by the addition of Gilmore. With a lifetime scoring average of about 30 points per game, George Gervin gives the Spurs a scoring machine unmatched in the league except by a handful of stars over the last 30 years. By the time he has finished his career in the NBA, Gervin will stand alongside Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and a few others as one of the great scorers in basketball history. Gilmore is 33 years old but has averaged more than 20 points per game for the last six years and obviously gives the Spurs a powerful new offensive weapon. He also is one of the most intimidating centers in the league and should provide stability in the middle. off-seas- 46-3- Elvin Hayes provides up ut high-scorin- mid-seaso- By RICH ROSENBLATT UPI Sports Writer Moses Malone's first words as a Philadelphia 76er could be taken as a warning by the rest of the NBA. ar lion. The Malone, in six seasons with the Rockets, averaged 23.9 points and 14.9 rebounds per game. Prior to their acquisition of Malone, the 76ers dealt center Darryl Dawkins to the New Jersey Nets. Joining Malone and Erving, who ayeraged 24.1 points per game last year, in the 76ers' lineup will be Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney and Lionel Hollins and Bobby Jones at the other forward. Beyond the first six, Philadelphia, coached by Billy Cunningham, appears to need some bench ros- strength. Other players on the ter include Earl Cureton and Clint Richardson. The Celtics made a few moves of their own. Boston's chief architect, Red Auerbach, gave Milwaukee the a rights to Dave Cowens, making in hiatus, comeback after a return for guard Quinn Buckner. Boston, led by sharpshooting forward Larry Bird (23.5 points a game) appears to be stronger than last year with the addition of Buckner, a solid point guard. Terry Teagle of Baylor was their top draft addition. The Nuggets again should be the "no defense" team of the divisiion with Kiki Vandeweghe, Alex English and Dan Issei leading the all-ooffense. The Nuggets set NBA records for points scored and average per game last season but also set marks for points allowed and average per game. The Nuggets believe they will not only survive but actually profit g from the loss of David Thompson, traded to the Seattle Super Sonics. Thompson and Coach Doug Moe did not see eye to eye from the start of the season and Thompson was used sparingly after n a suspension. The Nuggets look like a good bet for second and the most likely challengers to the Spurs if, in fact, any team in the division can challenge San Antonio. The general feeling is that the Nuggets are strong enough up front but weak in the backcourt. Kansas City has acquired Ray Williams from New Jersey and expect him to average about 20 points a game. They also expect big improvement from Steve Johnson, now in his sophomore year after a painful learning process as a rookie center last season. The Kings' top draftee was LaSalle Thompson of Texas. Dallas also is involved in a slow building program that is unlikely to bring dramatic results this year. . OCTOBER SATURDAY, 77 I AlrForc Akron 60 9 9 Alabama Arizona (11 ... When Malone departed Houston for Philadelphia, the Rockets' realistic chances to threaten the Spurs left with him. For all Malone's ability, the Rockets compiled a modest 6 record last season and it seems impossible that Caldwell Jones, acquired from the 76ers as partial compensation, can even be an equalizer.
