N. r er Faust Plans To lose W eight By RANDY MINKOFF UPI Sports Writer A not too svelte Gerry Faust figures it won't take him long to get down to playing weight with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It isn't that losing weight is the rookie Notre Dame coach's top priority as he prepares for his first year with the Irish. It's just something that has become veteran of Cinsomething of a ritual for the cinnati Moeller High School. Faust knows how he gained the weight, which ballooned him to 213 pounds. "I gained something like 18 pounds during the summer. Most of it was being on the banquet circuit," Faust said. "It seemed like I had a banquet to speak at every other day since I signed the contract." The fiery Faust said about halfway into the season he will lose the weight, due mostly to anxiety. "I can lose it pacing up and down the sidelines, maybe 20 pounds or so;" he said. Faust not only expected the weight gain but the massive attention he has received since taking over for Dan Devine at Notre Dame. His name was hardly a household word at the time he left Moeller after compiling a glittering mark. His cover adorns several football publications, including the Irish media guide. He not only has spoken at numerous Notre Dame functions but has attended clinics, camps and s e m i n a r s before he ever coached a down at the school that produced Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy. "I expected it. You know, it does make some added pressure, but that's what you expect when you take the job at Notre Dame." Faust said. "I wouldn't have it any other way. Football is a special tradition here, and the spirit and tradition make it gather the attention." Just being the coach at Notre Dame would garner enough attention, but Faust's unique style and personality have earned him an unusual amount of focus by the media. He is a devout Roman Catholic. A familiar photograph of Faust is his praying before a game with his team. Unlike Devine. who was more low keyed and less animated, Faust is a tiger in practice and along the sideline. "He's very charismatic," said Bob Crable, an linebacker who played for Faust at Moeller. "His attitude just rubs off on you. It's contagious. You want to win for this man." Wingback Tony Hunter says he could tell the difference in styles between Faust and Devine during the first day of spring practice. "Coach Devine was kinda quiet, but Coach Faust, well, you knew right away where he was coming from. He's so exuberant, so strong," Hunter said. "You have to like his attitude. He's brought the squad together." Being together is a hallmark of the Faust coaching philosphy. He stresses teamwork, avoids the star system that plagues other major college programs and goes out of his way avoid playing favorites. "I can tell you this honestly. I love every one of the players on this team. I am so impressed with the way they have molded together, worked together as a unit," Faust said. "Their attitude, well, it's beyond what I had expected." SOUTH BEND, Ind. He went back to Moeller for some of them, but denies using his ties with the school as a means of coercion. "I told them and the parents that they should treat me just like any other coach," Faust said. "And they did. No special treatment either way." It is Notre Dame's faith in Faust's recruiting abilities, despite his having never done it before, which may have swung the job to him. "I've loved everything thus far," Faust said. "Of course, come back and ask me that after the fourth or fifth game of the season." Peg piur T WtMdhjndtfr As you would expect with someone in the mold of a Gerry Faust, the new coach is an optimist. He enters his first season with full expectations of being able to win every game on a schedule that includes LSU. Purdue, Florida State and Southern California. "You may not believe this, but I didn't even look at the schedule until the day I signed my contract with Notre Dame," Faust recalled. "I want to play the best in the country. That's part of the tradition at Notre Dame, you play the best." Fortunately for Faust, there is reason for his optimism and expected high early season national ranking. Devine did not leave the cupboard bare. Three quarterbacks, including sophomore Blair Kiel, return. The top rusher. Phil Carter, is back, along with Hunter, who Faust moved from split end in spring drills. Crable anchors the defense, whose only uncertainty is in the front four. 7? 27x850-1- 99.95 4 129.95 139.95 3110.50-1- 5 32x11.50-1- 5 875x16.5 9.50x16.5 Thru Sept. III I L.
