The city's agricultural land is now basically west of Interstate 15. The planning staff attributes this to the attractiveness of building near Brigham Young University, the railroad and interstate working as natural barriers, a high water table and the fact that Provo's farming history has been characterized by ex- "sir a. r -- MmUMLim,J Housing is crowding farms out in Provo -- Provo's present zoning ordinance calls for the protection of agricultural land until "such time as residential, commercial or industrial uses in such areas -- become pre-existi- farmers tracts of with relatively large land. That fire was finally contained by late afternoon. Crews were called to the largest of the six fires Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Newton said. That fire destroyed 1,800 acres on Longridge in the West Hills Range west of Nephi. The fire occured along the old scar area where a fire burned out of control two years ago. Local firefighters and the BLM fire crew fought that blaze until Monday at 6 p.m. when the fire was finally declared contained, according to Newton. The third fire burned an area known as the Tanner Wash Flats just east of the Little Sahara Sand Dunes. More than 1,000 acres burned before the fire Six lightning induced blazes and NEPHI several small fires kept Juab County firefighters busy over the weekend after lightning storms passed over the area. Greg Newton, county fire marshal, said that firefighters spent the night Saturday chasing "smokers," but that early Sunday morning his crews began fighting fires that eventually burned over 3,600 acres. Newton said that fire crews were called to the first of the six fires at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. The fire, north of Scipio, was considered contained after it had burned only two acres. Utah Countv Democratic Pary Chairman William Evenson announced the party s his resignation from leadership post in keeping with school policy prohibiting university level administrators from participating active ly in partisan politics. Evenson was recently name director of BYU's General Education Program and under present university policy was left with no other option if he wanted the job. Under his new title, Evenson is in urban development: Increased populations raising the demand for housing in the area. County zoning ordinances severely limit development outside incorporated limits. There are large areas of undeveloped land on the west side, whereas much of the other undeveloped land in the city is characterized by smaller, more dispersed parcels which limit the nature of development. The cost of west side land is substantially lower. Utilities have already been provided to a large extent on the west side. The cost of farmland is a chief barrier to expansion of farm operations and works against the "economics of scale" farmers need to maintain a viable operation.
