The way it is made is to have a metal rod drawn holes through a series of dies in a very hard metal plate or brittle after being pulled through a few dies. This is because making the wire smaller forces the metal grains in its structure out of shape. The wire will break if it is not treated by being heated in a furnace and allowed to cool slowly. This treatment, called annealing, lets the metal grains return to their normal shape and makes the wire soft enough to be worked again. Most wire can be bent easily, but for some purposes a stiff wire is needed. For these uses the wire is given a different kind of block. heat Each die is slightly smaller than the last one, and each one makes the metal rod a little longer and thinner. Special lubricants are used to make the wire pass more easily through thedies. When wire is being drawn, the metal usually becomes .hard and tempering. This hardens the wire but doesn't make it brittle. Springs are sometimes made from tempered wire. Wire can be made from many different metals. Iron, copper, aluminum, gold, silver, and tungsten are the metals most commonly used. Often the metal ByA. LEOKUM Win the New Book of Knowledge (20 volumes).
