The film stars Bryan Brown (of "FX" fame) as Dirk Staun, the head of Nobel House and the most successful trader which earns him the title of Tai-PaFalling into disfavor with the emperor because the traders are selling opium to the Chinese in exchange for silver, the Tai-Pa- n is sent for and told that all of the opium on the island will be burned and the traders can pack up and depart immediately. Straun and the others leave the island and sail to an area known as Hong Kong to resume operations. Naturally, Straun's most vocal opponent and adversary, Tyler Brock (John Stanton), feels that Straun is and he due to be replaced as Tai-Pa- n is doing everything in his power to cause Straun's downfall. Even though Straun is locked in battle with his would-b- e replacement, he is comforted by his slave May-Ma- y (played to perfection by Joan Chen). Chen's range of emotions from slave to lover and confidant can only make one hope that China's number one box office actress has some other projects available for American audiences to see. John Stanton as Brock is perfectly cast as the type of villain you love to hate, playing his role with believability and without the least bit of overkill. Straun's son arrives in Hong Kong and is totally contemptuous of the way his father makes his living and falls in love with Brock's daughter, which is a match Brock's son Gorth (Tim Guinee) is going to stop at all costs. Guinee's performance runs from the good natured guy to a real psycho. The screenplay by John Briley and Stanley Mann takes the meat of Clavell's novel and translates it to the screen most effectively. We're sure that there will be some critics who ' will bemoan the fact that Tai-Pa- n wasn't filmed word for word from the book, but that would mean an eight hour movie and a lot of sore backsides. With a score by Maurice Jarre, production design by Tony Masters edited by Anthony Gibbs and all under the intelligent direction of is a visually Daryl Duke, Tai-Pa- n stunning, colorful romance which can keep a viewer riveted to the screen for all of its 127 minutes. "This is a great day for Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and American Airlines," said Peter J. Dolara, American's vice president for the Atlantic and Caribbean. "And this is only the beginning," he said, adding, "There will be more flights added in January and again next summer." Dolara made his remarks during ceremonies marking the inaugural flights from San Juan to three cities, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Chicago, where American has its second hub. The airline also flies into the Caribbean from New York, Newark, Boston, Miami and from its Worth. largest hub, Dallas-Fo"American has been a major carrier in the CAribbean for the past 15 years and this hub will greatly increase that presence, both in Puerto Rico and in the rest of the Caribbean," Dolara said. rt Ci dpi too aCG&aaa V:- TAI-PA- f . . . Then, after you find that she doesn't work at the restaurant, she offers you a ride back to work but heads off in another direction for an afternoon of sexual fun and frolic. That's the premise of Something Wild, starring Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith. Daniels is a totally predictable charcater named Charles Driggs, with Griffith playing Lulu, a totally unpredictable girl prone to jump out of more closets than anyone you may know, and goes through more changes in order to prove what a free spirit she is. For the first 25 minutes this film is a lot of fun, but after that it takes a turn for the worse and never comes back to the cleverness it promised at the start. People are going to try to fix the blame for the downfall of Something Wild and everyone could end up taking a thrashing. We can't blame Jeff Daniels or Melanie Griffith, as they have proven track records and perform well under the circumstances. It isn't the fault of first-tim- e scriptwriter E. Max Frye. Once the script-i- s sold, the production company can change whatever it likes. Therefore we fix the blame on director Johnathan Demme (of "Melvin and Howard" fame) who tried to merge too many ideas into one film. Demme is the too, which makes him twice as guilty. We predict that Something Wild won't have the "legs" for a long run at the box office and while we won't e.
