Mountain Crest's Mustangs have been an ugly stepsister to the Bear of Bear River, but at the expense of Judge Memorial, they now have a chance to redeem that image. Judge's Bulldogs had to settle for a field goal in the second quarter here Friday as their only score. Adam Jolley connected on a boot that tied the game at 3 at the half-tim- e break. Judge had a chance to forge ahead in a game that turned into a mud bath late in the third quarter as Jolley lined up for a second field goal shot. But the attempt was tharted when the oversized Mustangs bolted through the line to block the placement. "The conditions weren't the best to say the least," said Coach John Colosimo. "We couldn't pass and we couldn't get a complete ground game going." SALT 3-- ..V ' The Mustangs took the lead in the fSft SNOW BOWL . . . Russ Johnson then took over for a while in the second half, intercepting a pass in the third quarter to set up his own touchdown run on a seven-yar- d advance. Johnson scored again in the fourth run, upping quarter on a four-yar- d the Bengal advantage to 35-Skyline then mounted its best offensive effort of the day. Driving down field against the Bengals' substitutes, the Eagles got to Brighton's one before the Bengals added insult to injury. On a play, the ball popped up into the air and was gathered in by defensive tackle Rick Stone, who then proceeded to run 99 yards to the runs Sparked by the 201 yard, three touchdown performance of Mike Forsyth and a devastingly thorough defensive effort, Brighton's Bengals ripped Skyline 47-- 0 in state quarterfinal action Thursday at the University of Utah. It's hard to imagine Brighton playing any better than it did against Skyline and coach Steve Dangerfield is hoping his team can maintain that edge a couple of games longer, beginning with Highland today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. in semi-finaction. "You always wonder if your kids have peaked at the right time," reported a very pleased Danger-fiel"if, after a game like this, there'll be a let down. My guess is that these kids will play the same way against Highland." Brighton could've made things worse against Skyline, recovering a fumble deep in Eagle territory with just over a minute left in the contest. But Brighton, under Dangerfield's direction, kept it on the ground and up the middle. "We'd proved what we wanted to prove," he said. "Anything else would've just been rubbing salt in a sore wound." The key to the win, according to Dangerfield, was the 21-- 0 first half. After that, he felt, Skyline began to fall apart, while "every guy we sent in was fired up." Forsyth scored all three first half touchdowns, as, the scene of chasing Eagele defenders, grabbing desperately at his flapping jersey was repeated. The senior running back scored first on a run, Mike Barstow adding the first of five straight points after. In the second quarter, Forsyth added a scoring run. So we had to send our front line people back in." Brighton reserve running back Jeremy Rawle added the capper on a gallop against a more than demoralized Eagle defense. Forsyth amassed his yards on just 15 carries, averaging over 13 yards a try. Johnson didn't have a bad day either, picking up 93 yards on 12 attempts. If you're a newcomer to woodsplit-tin- g chores and believe that all that is needed is brute strength with the swing of the axe to get the woodsplit-tin- g job done, read on says the Hand Tools Institute, an association of tool manufacturers whose members include suppliers of woodsplitting tools dating back to colonial times. HTI says certain rules must be followed to do the woodsplitting job. Foremost, safety goggles should be worn to prevent serious eye injury from possible flying chips of metal or wood. Perhaps one of the most common FOR HOLIDAY CASH ssyL misconceptions among many woodsplitters is that it is correct to strike a woodsplitting steel wedge with the flat striking face of the axe. HTI says this should never be done. The axe is not intended for, nor capable of withstanding, the impact of the blow, and the possibility of metal chip fragmentation is very high. The correct tool to strike a woodsplitting wedge is the sledge end of a woodchopper's maul or a double face sledge, 6 lbs., or heavier. HTI points out that single bit cutting axes are used to fell and trim trees and split and cut wood with their cutting edge. Their striking face may be used to drive soft material such as wood or plastic stakes, but never against woodsplitting steel wedges. The double bit face axe is used only to fell, trim or split and cut wood. Both types of axes come in a wide range of patterns and weights. When selecting an axe be certain its weight is the proper one for your strength. Woodsplitting wedges are used when the cutting edge of the axe will not do the job. This is normally the case when the diameter of the wood to be split is too large or the length of the wood is too long. In this case, it is recommendced that a starting notch be made with the cutting edge of the maul. Then insert the wedge followed by a few light taps to assure that the wedge is well imbedded into the wood to be split. Next, position yourself so that your weight is well balanced to strike the wedge squarely with the face of the maul or sledge hammer. Avoid glancing blows, as they could send the wedge flying. . Regardless of which tool you are using when splitting wood, it is good practice to periodically exmaine it for chips, cracks, excessive wear or x . mushrooming. There are two further points to remember: first, rest frequently as fatigue can result in a miscalculated swing and second, keep others away from the woodsplitting area to avoid ' . injury from flying chips.
