These are called two piece metal caps. There are several brands; each should be used as directed by the manufacturer. This type lid should be used only once. If Kept in good condition, the bands can be used a number of times. Examine jars and wash in hot, soapy water. DO NOT use wire brush, scrubbing pad, or any other metal object. Metal scratches glass, and scratches cause breakage from thermal shock. Rinse jars and leave in hot water until needed; they do not need boiling. Put lids in sma'.l pan and pour boiling water over them set aside until needed. Make syrup to 1 cupful Is needed for each quart of fruit. For cups of medium sweet syrup, use 3 cups cane or beet sugar to 4 cups water. Boil 3 or 4 minutes and keep hot until needed. More or less sugar may be used; and if you like the taste, you may use honey as one half of the sugar. Light corn syrup may also be substituted for one half of the cane or beet sugar. Fill canner half full of water and put over heat. Have ready more hot water if needed to cover jars after putting them into canner. cold Measure water into a container and add 1 tablespoon each of salt and vinegar for each 2 quarts water.
