Of Valley Opera Good For 'Aida1 departments of universities and colleges of the Utah area and included many from outside the state." Familiar Author Mr. Stavis, who is to Provo theatre goers, presents in this" play scenes from the life of Joseph who was sold into Egypt, later to become that : country's governor. The script contains moments of high comedy as well as those of dramatic tension that come only when ideas and emotions are set in conflict Dr. Harold I. Hansen, direc tor, presented for. his audience a play of careful production. He has . creatively, blended script, acting, and technical theatre so as to produce a pre sentation of even balance in cluding bright comedy and sus- penseful anticipation. Good Characterization Tristan Pico is seen as Joseph, a character he seems to wear with easy manner and yet saves enough arrogance to keep the character interesting. Prime story teller of the play was Roger Nelson seen as the oldest of Jacob s 12 sons- .- As Reuben, he was consistent and completely believable and did much toward setting the mood of the play. Standout of the evening was Lael J. Woodbury as Pharaoh. Dr. WoodDury, who nas returned after too long an ab sence, added amusement, philosophy, and keen' Interest to every scene In which he. appeared and was an obvious crowd pleaser. ' Tamara Fowler as Vashnee and Dan Staples as Potiphar were especially strong. Both actors of experience, they contributed considerably to the play's strength, as did Jack Sederholm as Malfl Brilliant Costuming Beverly Warner's costumes were a complete delight. The color and pomp of the Egyptian court came brillaintly to life and seemed to be not only historical in mood, but accented Impressively the ingenious, at tractive, and versatile set provided by designer Charles Hen- son. Robert Strutters' techni cal supervision seemed to 'be near perfection and all blended In a happy, interesting, and most enjoyable way. The Dramatic Arts Depart ment is to be highly compli mented for undertaking this kind of challenge and achieving tt so successfully. The "Coat of Many Colors" Is for everyone. It funs through May 7 and should definitely be on everyone's "must see" list t tives, Amonasro, king of Ethi opia and fatheri of Aida.
