Show t. , 16 SUNDAY HERALD SUNDAY, JUNE 9. 1957 Utah County. Utah Branch Rickey, the famed of baseball judge and developer Bob Bundy talent, once called tiie "guttiest player I ever saw." And, Bundy. who once warranted a trial with the Brooklyn Dodgers, proved last Thursday night at Harmon Park that Rickey was speaking no idle words when he made that statement. Bundy was pitching for the G. Lowry Anderson team against Ward Market the Carlson-Secon- d a Utah Counrty Major team in Softball League game, when he was hit on his hurling hand by a line derive in the fifth inning. The blow caused a compound fracture of one of the fingers of his pitching hand. But, Bundy, who also is an infield er with the Provo Timps, just gritted his teeth and kept throwing the ball plateward. Carlson-SeconWard d "And, the to go eight innings Market had to beat him. "Nobody realized how badly the finger was injured until after the game was over," Pete Oisen, the league director said. "It didn't bother me much until about the seventh inning," Bob said the day following the accident. "Then blood started spurting from it so freely I had a tough time keeping the ball dry." Willis Randall of Pleasant Grove landed a carp while fishing: on the Jordan River the other day. 35-in- ch 28-pou- nd, The Phillies have- - been the surprise of the National League so far this season. And. Granny Hamner, baseball observers feel, is the key to the upsurge of the Philadelphians. Yet, a couple of years ago Hamner appeared to be washed up as a Major Leaguer after he severely injured his left shoulder while trying for a diving catch of a line drive. He gave pitching a whirl, but that didn't work, so when his left shoulder started feeMng better he decided to give second base a try. (In 1954 he had been the National A 11 --Star League'! ithortstop). After several weeks of practice, Hamner stepped into the PMMies lineup as their second sacker on May 7. He celebrated his return by belting a mighty home run into the upper deck in field and otherwise contributed to an 4 e victory over the then Braves by making spectacular fielding plays. His booming bat wasn't silenced for 12 games. And, the Phillies were back in the thick of things, all because of Hamner' g miraculous comeback. left-cent- er 8-- first-plac- Left O'Doul, looking over a Pacific Coast League throng of 600, shrugged: "They must be waiting: for the Majors." Many observers wonder if Major League baseball will draw out on the West Coast after the novelty of it has worn off. Perm State, Texas California Win In NCAA Baseball OMAHA, Neb. (UP) Golden Bears California's Colorado stopped State College's Bears, Saturday night in the first round of the NOAA College World Series at Omaha. It was the third shutout of the opening day baseball games. Texas trimmed Connecticut, and Penn State Wanked Florida in afternoon games. State, Notre Dame met Iowa State In the second night game. Kelly led California's hitting attack with three safeties in four trips. Wayne Coates and Gentry each hit to pace Colorado State. John Hogg, Colorado State Star righthander, was the loser. Ed Brapcho of Penn State shutout and pitched a three-h- it strikeout artist Harry Tayior tossed the shutout for Texas. 4--0, Midva Encounter Scheduled Here Today BARCELLA By United Herald Sports Editor Midvale's rollicking wrecking crew moves into Timp Park to day bent on bringing the highflying Timps and their winning streak crashing to the ground. Manager Pete Yengich's gang of fence busters will tangle with Manager Doug Hansen's Timps and the resulting collision may produce some-terri- fic baseball pyrotechnics. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. and the winner will move into undisputed possession of first place in the Utah State Baseball League. Both Undefeated are undefeated, Both teams with the Timps boasting a 0 record and the Mid vale club a mark in league play to date. Mid vale was one of the two teams to beat the terrific Timps in 1956, as Manager Hansen's charges rolled through their last 20 games of the campaign undefeated. Manager Yengich's charges defeated the Timps in an exhibition tilt a little over a year ago, but were unable to turn the trick in league competition. The only other team to beat the Timps last year was American Fork's Stealers, who turned the trick on 1 23-ga- LEADER Manager Doug Hansen of the Timps will lead his club against Midvale today at Timp Park, starting at 2:30 p.m. TIMP y Thursday's Results 512 070 384 x 11 6 15 11 2 Batteries: Backus and Johnson; Collings, Farley and Brady. 2-- 0 Orem Tenth Orem Second 1418 04 000 4 1 2 1 0 Batteries: Clayton, Seeley and McDonald; Backus, Gourdin, Clark and Calder. Manager Yengich said he expected to open today's game with deve Jenkins, a youthful righthander, on the mound. Midvale lost only one player of any consequence from its club of last year. power-packe- d That one player is Curt Jensen, the University of Utah star, who recently signed a Boston Red Sox contract. Fills In Admirably But Mitch Price, former Jordan High quarterback and Columbia University passing sensation of a couple years back, is filling in admirably at shortstop, Manager Yengich said. And, they say Mitch is really hitting the old horsehide, too. Other big power hitters on the Midvale club include Pete Spare-booand Don Price, who led the attack as the Salt Lake County team rolled over Magna and Bingham in their first two games this season. The Timps are hoping to match Midvale's power with the likes of Garth Ford, Jimmy Cleverly and Hansen, and are hopingtheir pitching and greater team spe will throw the advantage their way.
