We were very lucky that Hurricane Isabel weakened from a Category 5 to a Category 2 by the time it made landfall As it was, more than 6 million customers lost power during the storm. There were at least three dozen deaths reported. Snowplows were called in to help g move water out of areas. At least 70 Naval ships were sent out to sea away from the hurricane. A "down" tourism season was made even worse. A wind gust of 107 mph was recorded at Gwynns Island, Virginia. Over 11 inches of rain were measured in Big Meadows, Va. An Moot storm surge of ocean water was noted at Richmond City Locks. Many trees were toppled and rivers surged out of their banks. It's a good thing that the ocean water off the West Coast is'too cold to support such big storms! Uhlf elder, 64, and his news- - f stand at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue are as much a neighborhood fixture as the subway ' entrance nearby. His father hawked newspapers on the same street in the 1940s. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter, but as Uhffelder says, it's a living. Now Uhlfelder and hundreds like him who have worked their newsstands for years are about to make the forced transition from owner to renter. . Under an ordinance law passed last year, the city will re d corrugated-meta- l shacks, owned mostly by individuals with uniform stands owned, designed and maintained by a single company. Exactly what the new ones ' will look like has yet to be decided. But they will display advertisements, which city officials expect to bring in millions in revenue. While Uhlf elder will be allowed to continue to sell newspapers on his corner, he will lose ownership of his newsstand and, he argued, New York win lose a link to its past. "There's nothing left of New York anymore," he said. There'sflo street furniture that resembles New York City."' City officials say the new design will clean up the look of New York's bustling sidewalks and make it easier to walk around towa But others say the disappearance of the old shacks will rob the streets of New York of their variety and hurly-burly- . They see the move as another example of creeping corporate uniformity the same process that has brought The Gap and Barnes and Noble to neighborp hoods of stores and turned XXX-rate- d Times Square into a family-- f riendly shopping district.
