The orchestra also welcomes play Watt's happenin? Former Minutemen bassist makes most of second chance following serious illness If you go Alan Sculley . SPECIAL TO THE DAILY HERALD the seminal early '80s, band Minutemen, Mike Watt and that group's frontman, D. Boon, were famous for writing short songs some as brief as 30 seconds and few that ran more than two minutes. So Watt would seem to be an unlikely musician to write a album-lengt- h rock is what he's done which opera, on his new CD, "The Second-man'- s Middle Stand" But Watt who is appearin Salt Lake , at Ego's ing Friday City says writing a rock opera is not quite the departure that it at first seems from the short and sweet songwriting approach of the Minutemen, which ended in 1985 when Boon died in a car accident. "Believe it or not, the idea of the (Minutemen) gigs was to make it like one big song with all these small parts," Watt said. "So maybe without knowing it, I was kind of on that road" With The Secondman's Middle Stand," Watt had a subject that lent itself to a theme album treatment. The record recounts an illness three years ago abscess caused by a near-fatthat put the bassist out of commission for several months. The CD begins by describing the onset of Watt's illness, which began with a fever that lasted for 38 straight days. The fever left Watt feeling miserable (the songs "Puked to High Heaven" and "Burstedman" give a good idea of the effects of the illness) and doctors were perplexed about the cause and how to treat the symptoms. On many occasions, Watt thought his days were numbered "I'd never had so little hope in my life," Watt said of the initial phase of his disease. "I was going down and it seemed like nothing was working to help me. It seemed like kind of a desperate situation" The source of Watt's illness became clear when an abscess in his perineum burst, sending him to the hospital for emergency surgery. A long road to recovery followed in which Watt was tethered to tubes necessary for various bodily functions. But at least Watt felt he had turned a corner.. "I was in for a lot more pain and hurting and stuff , but it was completely different because yeah, I kind of had hope," Watt said. State St., Salt Lake City Tickets: $10, available at www.tickets.com The final three songs on The Secondman's Middle Stand" describe the final phase of Watt's recovery as he became strong enough to begin playing bass, ride his bike and return to normal activities. Going through the illness, Watt said brought a new urgency to his life. "I think it made me look at life as an opportunity and not so much as a burden," Watt said "You know how we get caught up in the little tiny things and they seem to weigh so much? In the big picture, there are a lot of opportunities, and it takes something like that to make you appreciate it." Watt is making the most of his time these days, with multiple projects having reached completion In January and February, Watt hooked up with organist Pete Mazich and drummer Jerry Trebotic to record The Secondman's Middle Stand The organbassdrums format is a new twist for Watt, and it seems to suit him wel The Secondman's Middle Stand" features some of the most engaging songs of his three solo albums (1995's "Ball-Ho- g or Tugboat and 1997's "Contemplating the Engine Room" are his previous albums). For instance, the surging organ of "Boffin' Blazes" lends considerable urgency and drama to that song, while "Puked to High Heaven" has an appealing jazz vibe. The CD hits an early apex with "Burstedman," which combines fevered spoken-word vocals wrapped around a recurring organ riff. Watt has also finished a new CD with his former wife, Kira Roessler, who for years have had a double-bas-s duo called Dos. He has also completed a new CD with Banyan, a band that features former Jane's AddictionPorno For Pyros member Stephen Perkins. Between those projects, Watt has been . playing gigs with the Stooges ' (featuring original members singer Iggy Fop, guitarist Ron Asheton and drummer Scott Ashetdn), who have reunited for the first time in 33 years. |
