Albert Edwyn "Ed" Haines, Jr., retired, died of natural causes July 17, 1997, in Provo, Utah, one week prior to NEPHIMONA Marjorie Moore Steiner, age 72, returned to the loving arms of Our Heavenly Father and her dear husband on July 18, 1997, at her home in Mona, after a valiant struggle with can- : U. S. Army, his 75th birthday, encompassed in a boundless "Circle of Iove". He lived a hero to his family, hit) faith, his and community nation, exemplifying his creed of Moral Strong Courage. Son of Albert Edwin Haines and Vivian Elizabeth Montague, Ed was born July 23, 1922, in Pocatcllo, Idaho and spent most of his growing up years in Carson City, Nevada. He married Thelda Gwilliam August 17, 1943, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and began a lifetime of personal and family adventure that reached acrosB continents Bnd generations. Inducted into the Army in October 1942, Ed served during World War II as a Lieutenant on the Siegfried Line in Germany, He is the recipient of two Purple Heart medals for wounds received in battle. He continued for a distinguished military career, retiring as Colonel in January 1969. Col. Haines' military assignments took him and his family to Ft. Lawton WA; Stuttgart, Germany; Ft. Harrison, IN; Ft. Devens. MA; Asmara, Ethiopia; Ft. Huachuca, AZ; Ft. Ieavenworth, KS; and Frankfurt, Germany, where he also LDS served Servicemen's as Coordinator with European Mission Their President, Ezra Taft Benson. twelve children were born during the military years. Ed and Thelda then settled their family in Provo, Utah, where he served 20 years as Director of Space on Utilization Young Brigham University's administrative staff, retiring in 1988. After retirement he served as Executive Secretary to Regional Representative, Jeffrey Holland. Four years after Thelda's passing in 1989, Ed married Evelyn Carlyn Remmele West on June 5, 1993, in the Manti LDS Temple. Ed and Evelyn recently completed a mission for the LDS Church in Hamburg, Germany. Evelyn is the mother of eight children. Sharlyn Hall of Springville, UT; Derik West of Logan, UT; Jonell Francis of Provo, UT; Pam Covey of The Gap, Queensland Australia; Brenton West of Scottsdale, AZ. She has 14 grandchildren. He now joins his wife, Thelda, his precious daughter, Jenelle, who died in 1967, at the age of six, his parents, his brother, Victor BarDee, and two grand- children. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, her five children, and his eleven children: Albert E. She was born August 22, 1913, to William and Dora Ibberson of Yorksire, England. She emigrated to the USA and made her home in Provo. Elsie loved to sing and sang with many choirs. She was a member of the LDS Church and served in many positions. She served in the TenneseeGeorgia Mission. She served as a volunteer at UVRMC for 13 years. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters, 2 brothers (England), one son, David (Australia). She was an active member of the LDS Church and held many positions of service to which she served She attended schools in Parowan and LDS Business College in Salt Lake. She loved to travel and mv valiantly. new sights. She was a temple worker in the Manti Temple for 10 years along with her husband. Burial in Vine Bluff Cemetery, Nephi, Utah. 6-- 8 Norma Thomas Atkin Norma Thomas Atkin, age 72, passed away on July 17, 1997, in Provo, Utah, of natural causes. She was born June 11, 1925, in Varteg, South Whales, to Richard Charles and Naomi Forward Thomas. She married Thomas Edgar on Atkin December 11, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. After meeting and falling in love with a young soldier during the war, Norma came to Utah at Tom's request and in classic style, they brought eight boys into this world. Living in Utah all her married life, Norma was surrounded by many she loved and respected. Norma embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ and served with all her heart in song and in deed, giving love to all she came in contact with. She was a true "stay at home Mom" complete with homemade bread and cookies. She was always at the crossroads of her family's lives, encouraging, loving, and always smiling. Norma will be greatly missed but we rejoice with her now as she moves on to a better world, reuniting with her loved ones. Alice Leal Cheney Johnson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away July 17, 1897dU( R. r" , -- Thorpe on March 26, 1952 in Provo, rs 8 1970 and Provo in served in the army in Europe during WWII. He was an Eagle Scout and he loved to fish, hunt and hike. He loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the scriptures. As a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints he served in a bishopric in Seattle, WA as a bishop in the BYU 8th and 50th Wards, and as the first counselor in the BYU First Stake presidency. He was a sealer in the Provo Temple for 13 wonderful years and served an LDS mission with his wife in the California San Jose Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland LDS Temple. JoAnn was a devoted wife and mother who spent her life serving her family, especially her daughter Gai! who needed mom's special care and love. She served faithfully in all she was called upon by the Lord to do. Maescr Award the For Excellence, Teaching Management Society Distinguished Achievement Award, and was named Professor of the Month by the Blue Key Service Organization. His career included employment with Hughes Dynamics, Summa Corp., and Seven for consulted Mt. Corp. He Continental Oil, ZCMI, Utah State Tax Commission, and the U.S. Air Force. He served on the Board of Clark's Directors for Apparel, Venture Ltd., and Provo Sporting Goods. He also served for many years as the Chairman of the Utah State Money Management Council, and was a member of the of the Management, Academy American Marketing Association, and Phi Kappa Phi. Survivors include his wife, three daughters and two sons, Ruth Kristine Wood (Ronald), South Jordan; Connie Jean Baker (Ronald), Sandy; Carrie Lee Thompson (Philip), Orem; Michael Paul Oaks (Cheryl), Provo; John Leland Oaks (Kairle Ann), Orem; two sisters, Janet Francis and Joyce Bird, both of Springville, and 25 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Barbara Lynne Oaks, and Shirley Elaine Oaks, his sister Carol Oaks, and two grandchildren. Special thanks to VistaCare Hospice and the doctors and staff at n Alma Dangerfield On July 17, 1997, lifelong Provo resident Alma Dangerfield quietly passed away, rejoining his eternal companion who preceded him in death 19 years ago. This humble, compassionate man was just two months short of his 100th birthday. He was born September 3, 1897, in Springville, Utah, to Jabez and Elizabeth Morris Dangerfield. His family moved to southwest Provo when he was very young where he received his education, beginning at Franklin Elementary school and graduating from Provo High School. He also took classes at the Brigham Young Academy. While he never professed to enjoy dancing, he did meet his wife, Mary Fowers, at the Utahna Dance Hall. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 4, 1918, by Joseph Fielding Smith. He taught his family, by example,' the value of honest work and; dedication. Early in life, he worked ia, the! sugar beet fields, laid railroad track, helped a brother in a printing business and worked at the Utah Woolen Mills. Before his marriage, he began his banking career at the Fanners and Merchants Bank in downtown Provo. This remarkable man dedicated over 60 years of service to the same organization where he saw ownershtp of the bank change twice: first to Walker Bank and then to First Interstate Bank. He was familiar with every aspect of the business as he served in virtually every position from bank teller to vice president. He retired twice, first at age 65 and again in 1978 at age 81. He taught patience and devotion as he faithfully cared for his sweet wife during the many illnesses which beset her most of their married life. He was active in the LDS Church and served as a Seven President of Seventy, a Ward Clerk and High Priest Quorum Secretary for many years. He is survived by his children, Norma Marrott, Orem; A. Dean (Carol) Dangerfield, Provo; Elaine (Rex) Reynolds, Orem; 14 grandchildren, 59 and four great-greagrandchildren.
