"Welcome to Wolf Mountain, exactly 875 feet above oxygen." DeYoung then started playing the song that got it all rolling for Styx, beginning the gentle piano opening to "Lady." The beautiful ballad was written in 1972, but didn't become a hit until it was three years later. Styx touched on all the key time periods of its career, but highlighted its "Grand Illusion" material. In addition to the title track, Styx performed "Man in the Wilderness," "Miss America" () l - PAItK CITY Styx were cerUiinly in seventh HIS ,IV- - Thursday niht In only its seiond lour in I years, Styx payed homage to its breakthrough album "The I'll I Illusion" in a magical concert at The Canyons, formerly Wolf Mountain. The hand played half a dozen cuts off that release Thursday night. In the spirit of David Copper-fieldthe band literally opened the show with a little illusion. The initial statins; was set up similar to last year's "Return to the Paradise Theatre" tour, right down to the befuddled janitor "Sparky." who was lazily sweeping the floor while chomping on a stogie as the show began. "You're last year's tour. Heat it," a loudspeaker voice told the janitor. He rushed away, leav-1a few seemingly empty prop "bo;i!s littering the stage. A couple explosions later, boxes the however, and revealed guitarists dames Young and Tommy Shaw, who immediately started into "The Grand Illusion" before being joined by the rest of the band Dennis De Young keyboard, , mm and "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" from that album during the concert's main set. In addition to the obligatory hits, such as "Too Much Time on mv Hands," "The Best of Times," "Snowblind,""Blue Collar Man" and "Babe," Styx also threw in a trio of new songs and a couple pleasant surprises, such as a acoustic set, Kspocially was .pleasing "Queen of Spades," a DeYoung composition off 1978's "Pieces of Might" album, which featured brilliant lasers and a scorching Young solo near Rong's end. The three riew numbers "On included Way," my "Paradise" and "Dear John," a song dedicated to original Styx drummer John Panozzo, who died last year. The beautiful mountain setting only served to enhance the laser and light show. i pat an illmsiooi nott tmef The main et closed with "Rockin' the I'aradise." Shaw's "Renegade" opened the three-son- g encore. Fittingly, the hand closed with u pair of "Grand Illusion" Iho fan favorite numbers "Come Sail Away" and "The Grand Finale." Unless the tluuidering ovation at show's end was also an illusion, Styx's reunion should continue lo he a successful one. l.The Grand Illusion 3. Lady 4, On my Way 10, Show me the Way 11.
