DECEMBER 20, Church Basketball Underway 1 jh82 Pioneers Beat Springuille of the back Domination boards, defense and hustle proved to be the right combination as Lehi completely outclassed the Devils from Springville. The first quarter started slowly as both teams had trouble finding the hoop, however, Lehi took charge of the boards (rom the beginning. .Lind scored the first four points, and Gary Carlton added a couple of buckets on steals and break away shots. Springville appeared completely puzzled by Lehi's tight trapping zone defen se. The quarter ended with Lehi leading by a 14 to 6 count. Lind's third foul early in the second quarter caused some anguish, but with Dennis Beck and Gary Carlton doing everything right, Lehi left the floor with a nine point half time lead of 25 to 14. The third quarter saw Lind start to display his all state form as he started to hit at a rapid pace as Peterson, Beck, Christofferson and Jolley made numerous key plays. Springvil-le'- s Christensen hit on a couple of long shots over the Lehi zone The Lehi stake started play last week with three leagues; seniors, age 26 and over; Young Adults, 18 through 25 and explorers ages 14 through 17. The Twelfth Ward was led by d with 12 points with Ross and Johnson adding nine each. The First Ward defeated the Second Ward 29 to 27. The First Ward was led by Urry with 12 the Sixth Ward by a score of 53 to 25. The Fifth Ward was led by Frank Stevens with 18 points . Burnham adding 12. Berry with 10 points. but then went right back to try and force the ball inside on Lehi's zone, only to lose the ball. The quarter ended with Lehi still up by 10, 38 to 28. A swarming man to man press by Springville did not seem to bother the Pioneers much as they increased their lead on smart heads up play through the fourth quarter. The final score of 49 to 36 had to be a convincing win for the Pioneers. This week's game is at PI. Grove and will start at 7:30 p.m. with the JV game at 5:40. 1973 nine. Drubs Lehi The first half was quite evenly played with Springville gradually pulling away to a 10 point half "time lead, 33 to 23. Springville has a tight man to man full court press and tough board work caused the Lehi JV to make many mistakes as they could not the penetrate Springville defense. Atkinson Lehi Sophs Down Payson Frank Steven's sophs started Vic Colledge, Chip Atkinson, John Harr, Howard Cooper and Ryan Davis. With a torrid fast break and good control on the boards by Atkinson and Cooper, Lehi broke away to a 23 to 11 first quarter lead. The contest was marred by an over abundance of fouls as the second quarter turned into a foul shooting contest. When play got back to real basketball the sophs just flat outclassed the Payson Lions. The half ended with Lehi leading 33 to 20. This is to help our readers be better acquainted with these young men and to bring out some of their interests. The player this week is Gary Carlton, starting guard for the Pioneers this year. Gary has been known for his speed and tenacious defense. In the last weeks, Gary has shown the ability to score well when the shots are put up. His games against Emery and Morgan last weekend and the excellent first half against Springville have proved outstanding ability in all aspects of the game. Gary carries a 3.9 grade point average and has been a member of the National Honor Society through his high school years. He is a member of the Longhorn Rodeo club and gets his excitement from riding bareback in the high school rodeos. Gary's interest has been in the athletic line for many years, as he has participated in Bantam basketball, little league football, and baseball. He received the honor in eighth grade as the outstanding Next Week Starting Christmas Day December 25 Thru December 9 Ski School The last registration for the annual Sundance Ski School will be Saturday, December 22, it was reported by Paul Hanson. Those desiring to register are asked to come to Mr. Hanson's home, 138 West 300 North, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mr. Hanson stresses that this is the last day and only hours he will accept registrations. Participants are requested to bring a parent with them to sign a release form at the time of registration. Those not having a parent with them will be unable to register, Mr. Hanson said. They are also asked to bring the correct registration fee, which GARY CARLTON athlete in his class.
