Show Lehi Auxiliary Police, Ambulance Service An Integral by Gordon Bennett It's been said that if you wzid something done, find a busy man to do it. This philosophy centainly is true with the members of the Auxiliary Police -- Ambulance. Looking back through the well-wor- n pages of 1973, recalling highlights of the units activities, we find some very impressive accomplishments. And, this year's success can only be contributed to hard work and dedication of each individual member. Along with the 'routine' ambulance and police assignments, additional service projects brought fortunate growth to the member, the organization, and the community. No accomplishment realized by the men this year, or any other year could equal the experiences and satisfaction that comes from giving care and service to the sick and injured. These special successes cannot be recounted in words. Hopefully, the deed speaks for itself. Unfortunately, once in awhile even the best of care is not adequate. Not only are these moments difficult for family and friends, but also for those who try so hard to help. In providing professional am- bulance service, advanced medical training has become an ever-increasin- necessity. g Special schools in Emergency Medical Technician training has allowed six members to be certified nationally this year alone. This is a most rigorous course The and very time and money spent for this education and training is a personal contribution by each member. A great deal has been expended to insure that every Am. The history of the Auxiliary Police is an interesting one, beginning as a Civil Defense organization back in 1956. Albert Mitchell was the very first commander (Captain) and under his direction, the unit was formed. During those days as many of you will recall, a threat of ato- mic attack hung over the nation. The purpose of Civil Defense at that time was to help handle the citizens and their needs in the event of atomic war. Since those early days, others have served as Captain. Men like: Dale Harris, Dale Walker, Joseph Kolan, Paul Draper, Wayman Winslow, Roland Dean, Gerald Turner and presently Art Allen. Each of these men made significant contributions, much of which was even personal to insure continued success. They continually sought growth, allowing the unit to be what it is today. We all owe these men a grateful thanks. Ambulance service in Lehi has been provided by the Auxiliary Police since 1956 with the first ambulance being a Civil Defense ("old Whitey") Cadillac. After that, the unit received, by funds earned, a 1957 Plymouth station wagon. Whenever we hit a bump carrying patients, they would bash their nose on the ceiling because the roof was so low. After some very "interesting" experiences with the Plymouth, the group y Pontiac acquired a 1961 ambulance. "Big Red", as it was affectionately dubbed. This unit served very well for many years. g In 1965 an all-oeffort to purchase a new, modernly equipped ambulance was made by the organization. Wayman Winslow was Captain and his personal efforts, along with many others brought good results. The International Travelall Wagon was delivered that summer. Before being "retired", this vehicle traveled over twenty-seve- n thousand miles, providing service and care to almost every imaginable sickness and injury. This year, with Arthur Allen as Captain, another milestone was reached with the arrival of the new Dodge Medicruiser. Many long hours of work and planning by Auxiliary members, many contributions from merchants and citizens and complete support from City officials brought to Lehi one of the finest al by handing out goodies to the patients.
