University of Utah swimming's most valuable of personnel. What's so fascinating about Jim Aumann is that his story is a one of those true to life iv athletic struggles where true grit and determination has payed off and taken Jim from swimming obscurity to world class prowess. Assistant Peter Coach Axelson agrees: "Over his four years here at the U. Jim has improved time and time again, and now he has the best chance of anybody here at qualifying for the NCAA finals in March." You see, Jim didn't set out to become the world's fastest 50, 100, 200, and relay freestyler. In fact, as he went through high school, at Judge Memorial in Salt Lake City, Jim didn't even competitively swim. "I used to swim a lot as a kid," recalls Aumann, "but as I got older, I just lost interest and didn't swim at all except for exercise." As Jim graduated from high school and began attending the U., the idea of swimming came back into focus and he decided to try out for the swimming team. "I hadn't planned to swim at all before college, and I barely made the team as a states Aumann. "I couldn't even swim fast enough to make qualifying walk-on,- " 3 ottotuaimoTOAcMSiM Utah swimmer Jim Aumann has constantly improved in his years on the U. swim team. But if anyone can do it, Aumann has the talent and the incredible drive to get there. Aumann's ultimate goal is perhaps most worthy of note: "I want to eventually be in the top 25 in the world in sprint swimming," he calmly states, as if it were a simple hop, skip, and jump. However, truly outstanding in whatever the cause, and Jim's quality is that he gives his all when you give 100 and more, the returns are surely within reach. Lady Ute tankers host BYU The Lady Ute swim team will continue its season as they go head to head with the Lady Cougars of Brigham Young at the Ute Natatorium tonight at 6 p.m.. The Lady Utes are up for a tough test as they will have to take on the defending WAC champs in the Lady Cougars. The Utah women have struggled and to date have not triumphed in a dual meet. Hopes are high though as the team prepares for the meet. Noted Coach Jim Wilson, "Yeah, we've struggled. But we're not complaining and we're going to continue to give everything we've got until that blessed day comes." While the Lady Utes are continuing to try and come up some with winning combinations, several swimmers have sparked some winning trends.
