Palestinians comprise the majority of the Old City's citizens and Israeli soldiers stand at denoted posts to keep order and largely protect the Western (Wailing) Wall for orthodox Jews' use. Mohammad Calah (left at right) served as an impromptu guide for the Chronicle's photographer, braving the scorn of his elders who were frightened the photographer was actually an Israeli spy. Mohammad said he wants to come to the United States because racial prejudices are not as prevalent in America as they are in his world. Markets in the Old City are common on numerous streets there (bottom left and top far right).
