Show The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Six Thursday, January 16. 1992 Letters Secondary smoke harmless Editor: Consumer's Research's (which I consider somewhat objective) July 1991 article, "Passive Smoking: How Great A Hazard" says you smoke people are full of it and basically trying to remove a privilege of ours (smoking) by strident exaggerations of what data exists to prove your case that secondary smoke may be hazardous to your health. The article by three MD's (and I have sent a copy to the Union Board and the Chronicle) states there is very little evidence to support your strident, moralistic, health fanatic cries of "no smoking anti-seconda- ry on earth." Of the 30 studies on spousal smoking and lung cancer, 26 showed no significant correlation. And yet some of the researchers in the negative studies still stated the rather unreasonable, and certainly unscientific conclusion that they still saw a "positive trend." As this article's authors state, "in most of science, 'trends' do not count; data stands as either statistically significant or not statistically significant." In the October 1991 edition, the authors of the above article responded to criticism that they ignored the link of secondary smoke with coronary heart disease citing a Religion rules Editor: This letter concerns your editorial "Sure Bet" on Jan. 6. 1 agree with the editorial's position on the church's negative attitude towards gambling. I think there is one additional point which should have been raised. That is, should organized religion use its position to maintain its monopoly on gambling in this state. Paying your tithe and staying in good standing study that "proved" 15 times more risk The authors pointed out that this was indeed surprising and made no sense, because studies with active smokers only showed a very weak link. They then pointed out that the study critics cited had made a few errors such as the risk was really only 2.7 times as great and not the 14.9 reported. And even that result used a very, very, (and not normally accepted) statistical criterion of p less than or equal to 0.1 (the accepted standard is usually .05 at worst). Therefore, you have no stats or data to throw in my face, you fascists. And you, the Olpin Union, had better keep a smoking room for me or you'll get public pressure you don't believe. Oh, thank you for at least retracting temporarily your stupid and speedy decision (only our state legislature and the abortion bill passage was quicker) of a totally Union. Maybe a "positive trend" will have The Church give us a "smoking is good for you and gambling is fun" revelation. I will certainly be more aggressive in defending my smoking privileges from now on, and I certainly encourage all other smokers to take a more aggressive and active posture. 1 non-smoki- Ralph Kranz Associate Librarian state in Utah with any religious organization can be considered the ultimate gamble. The irony is that this type of gambling would not be allowed in Nevada casinos because it could be interpreted as extortion, and there is a chance that no one has ever collected on this bet. Scharffs ("The gambling industry is a parasite on society, shouldn't be legalized). First, I do not believe that you have thought out all of your arguments very well. To say that the money spent on gambling could be used for other I (generous things contributionstithing) is ludicrous. People have the opportunity and right to spend money wherever they want and they probably wouldn't be "contributing" it anyway. Also, it is difficult to believe that if gambling is legalized, people will not go visit the sick or lonely of our state. They will most likely be driving to Wendover to spend their money there. This brings up my second point-th- at a teacher does not realize how powerful the LDS church is in Utah. To say that a church should not speak out against moral issues is one thing, but to have that church speak it's opinions out so loudly (and on all the media channels), is another. I believe that churches should make a stance on moral issues, but the LDS church because of the church's outcry against it. I enjoyed the last sentence of your letter that stated, "The First Amendment guarantees freedom of and religion." I agree wholeheartedly with this statement, but the Constitution also guarantees separation of church and state and speech that is an impossibility when a church that powerful makes statements as it did in this case.
