The FBI was called in to investigate and find their bodies. This is the story of that incident What was the reason for this senseless killing? Hackman's character, finally no longer able to stand by and watch the death and destruction, attempts to take matters into his own hands. He works hard to show the young agent the right way and the wrong way to go about the job. He succeeds in swaying Dafoe to his way of thinking and the results are electafying. Never before has a film affected me as much as this one did. I think it should be required viewing in all the schools, churches and shopping malls across the country. It is disturbing and shocking. It is also true. "Anyone is guilty who watches this and pretends it's not happening." answering them, and believe me, it's not pretty. 7 Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe play the two agents assigned to the case. Although Hackman is the senior in years, Dafoe is in charge. He's the young guy on the job and succeeds in making a mess of an even messier situa- (A tion. . Dafoe's character thinks the best way to handle the investigation is by talking to the people. The people in this case are the blacks being murdered and tortured for the simple fact of being black. The trouble with this line of action is that every time a black person talks with an agent, he ends up dead. Dafoe forges stubbornly ahead. People start dropping like flies around him. Houses and churches are burned to the ground, and still, he forges ahead.
