Show Wednesday, Chronicle - Page Six January 11, 1989 EDITORIAL ASUU cronyism apathy W 5f J k It is with deep regret and dissatisfaction that the Chronicle observes the current ASUU administration of Mike Kaly and Grant Sperry. A party which launched its campaign based on "apathy" and "openness" (a contradiction of logic in itself) has succumbed to the same evils it accused its opponents of committing: The idealism and egalitarianism propounded in the Whookie platform have been replaced by political games and crony- P0CT0RWSS7HS MGAN I CAN RON FOR PRBSIPSNT? AI0R ism.' The Whookies have long since abandoned the principle of apathy. Gone are the days of Mike Kaly and Grant Sperry as revolutionary dismantlers of ASUU. The Whookies brought their own definitive agenda to ASUU. Yet, instead of having the courage to defend the principles they held, Kaly and Sperry hid under the cloak of "we don't care." The Greeks were denied funding; the tax initiatives were defeated; the Whookie Garden was planted (to the tune of hundreds of student dollars); ASUU is now the proud owner of a $9,000 computer system :which could be replaced with a few sheets of paper. What happened to the party that didn't care about anything? Adding insult to injury, Kaly and Sperry Bel-A- mi Vf j proudly reaffirmed in a New York Times interview (Dec. 2) that they were, in fact, the "party of apathy." For the Whookies, apathy low-dow- - appears to be a useful tool for whenever needed. The outward manifestations of Whookie apathy (skirts, hair, clothes, etc.) have become a bit pretentious to those who are aware of the Whookies1 actual behavon ior.; Sadly, the schizophrenic nature of the Whookie administration has injured the efforts of other members of ASUU who are concerned with improving the University of Utah. Kaly and Sperry have entered the real world of responsibility and leadership. Unfortunately, they lack the requisite skills to effectively lead student government. Instead of utilizing ASUU's diverse board members' considerable experience in the operations of ASUU, Kaly has assumed the rather undemocratic approach of "we do it my way, or you can work somewhere else." Perhaps President ;. .; ; of power in political organizations (i.e., "president" does not connote "absolute", in representative systems). Through all of this, ASUU's board members quietly attempt to prevent the ship of student government from capsizing. Case in point is the recent firing of ASUU Finance Board Vice Chairwoman Tracey Heinhold. Heinhold unwilling to sign a purchase order which the chairman of the Finance Board, Nathan Wilcox, felt needed further examination, was fired by Kaly for failing to comply with his demand. It is also equally important to mention that I have met a few superbly beautiful LDS families. One of n, them has all but legally adopted me. I have benefited from their unselfish generosity. I continue to use ' them as a support system. Why then do I feel there is discrimination in the church? Simple; Not all Mormons made the transition with the church in ' 1978. Many members use the meetings to promote their and compassion for humani-- ; t ty. They publicly denounce apartheid, but secretly pray that the Aryan Nations open franchises across the state. It is amazing that my "adoptive family" does not subscribe to racism, while others, hiding behind the holy shield of the Book of Mormon, relish in it. When remnants of racial discrimination and other prejudices are in bold relief in the church, it is clear that LDS leaders have pitifully failed in expressing , the priesthood revelation promulgated by the late prophet Spencer Kimball in the summer of 1978. Was the language used too clinical for some hardcore bigots within the church to literally assimilate? The LDS Church should its committo ment eradicating all forms of bigotry. It should members who vehemently-discipli- ne strongly-n- o, are preaching their own brand of Mormonism. Those racists members are a detriment to the rapidly expanding church in countries where contents of . character precede the shades of skin in judging people. Further, it is unacceptable to preach ecumenical brotherhood while advocating even latent racial inequality. When I first came to this state, I was so fascinated by the LDS Church, its thrift, its wisdom, and its doctrine (clean living, morality, strong family ties), ,,that I obediently followed in its path. I wanted to ty). Is it my fault I am living in .a locale where 99.9 share in that sagacity, that communion of faith, of are the women Caucasian the and remainpercent respect, and hope. But when racial prejudice in its ugly, swampish forms comes close to home, I cannot help but feel the dirty devil called discrimination sinking its sharp teeth in my neck. It gives the eerie sensation of the deadly venom of hatred being injected into one's body. I expected the racial discrimination I encounter every other day in Utah to be better disguised, however. Its blatancy is agonizing mostly, when it is condoned-in the halls of the ecclesiastical community. In fact, I am deceived in the LDS Church in matters w 's 'l L1 ; ; lJl concerning Tacial relationships. The events which prompted this column began with my dating the daughter of a prominent LDS member last summer. The poor girl thought her beloved father was a righteous man who abided by the doctrines and covenants of the LDS faith. After all, he raised his daughter to believe everybody is created equal, God is multicolor, and even "Negroes are now welcomed in the celestial kingdom." Having been briefed on the father's gallant religious and social convictions, I reluctantly consented to visit the proud Christian man at his holy abode. , After conceding that I was greatly handsome and finely educated for a black, the father's greatest fears lay in what the rest of the congregation would think of him when "we" attended church meetings together. He was truly worried about his standing in the community. What an ad populum disgrace to his good name if I were to marry the infuriated daughter who was already mourning our stillborn engagement! I am not one to ignore an affront. I told the aggrieved father I felt sorry for him.
