Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Friday, June 3, 1983 Page Fifteen Rich get richer (30EX3 in recruiting wars by Dave Hosick Chronicle staff The final analysis in this season's college basketball recruiting wars is that the rich appear to have gotten richer, as traditional powers like North Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana State and Nevada-La- s Vegas enjoyed banner years. North Carolina Coach Dean Smith signed two of the top 10 players in the country Dave Popson from Kingston, Pa., and Joe Wolfe from Kohler, Wis. r. According to Smith, Popson is a real "He seems to thrive on pressure and seems to come up with key baskets or big defensive plays," he said. Wolfe could be the best high-scho- ol center prospect in the country, and he was heavily recruited by Marquette. He averaged 32 points and pulled down 18 rebounds a game last season. Virginia Coach Terry Holland has to fill the shoes of college basketball Player of the Year Ralph Sampson, but the signing of Olden Polynice and Tom Sheehey will help. Polynice averaged 23 points a game last season, while pulling down 15 rebounds and blocking six shots. He's regarded as an excellent, defensive player who should get better with college experience. Sheehey, from Brooklyn, N.Y., has been compared with NBA ar Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics. According to his ol coach, he can play forward or guard. And he's a fierce competitor. Louisiana State Coach Dale Brown combed the country from (30ES 10(3 game-playe- ''' 9 All-St- high-scho- coast to coast and ended up with three high-scho- ol Tom Curry, Damon Vance and Nikita Wilson. j Curry is from Baton Rouge, La., and according to Brown, he has the talent to play power forward or center in college. "He moves well for a big man, and he is a prolific scorer and rebounder," Brown said. Vance was ranked by most scouting services as the top player available in California. He was heavily recruited by UCLA, Southern California and Nevada Las Vegas. Wilson was recruited bv more than 200 schools before narrowing his choices down to Louisiana State, Kentucky and DePaul. He decided to attend LSU "because of their winning tradition and exciting style of play." Nevada-La- s Vegas Coach Jerry Tarkanian signed three top in Banks of Las Vegas, Ed Catchings from El Fred prospects star Richard Robinson from Camino, Calif., and Granada Hills, Calif. lit.-)teM!r- Magazine as the top was high-scho- ol m ill! t wvWWWOCw S Tfc, M M jKk in rase of bad weather.
