The 1982-8- 3 season was the stuff that dreams are made of for the Runnin' Ute basketball team. The Utes were picked to finish no higher than sixth in the Western Athletic Conference in most preseason polls. And not only did Jerry Pimm's squad shock the league by winning the conference title; it also shocked the entire nation with stunning wins over Illinois and UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. Utah struggled during the preseason with a bruising schedule Virginia, Houston, and an unsettled lineup. But with the beginning of the WAC wars and the insertion of center Chris Winans and freshman guard Manuel Hendrix into the starting five, the Utes gradually jelled. As the conference season wore on, Utah won when it counted the most and went from dark horse to contender with a big win at home over BYU and road victories at Hawaii and New Mexico. The clincher came down at Provo on March 5 with the memorable triple overtime win against the Cougars. At the NCAA subregional in Boise, Idaho, the Cinderella story continued as seniors Pace Mannion and Peter Williams shocked Derek Harper and the fighting Illini 9 on March 17 and then followed it up by slaying the 1 a Goliath of college basketball UCLA ended in dream The later.
