Call 279 8550, Bear River 24 x 60 DOUBLE of When I was, seven years old, my parents began taking my brothers and me to Sunday school and church. I began to learn many wonderful Bible truths that answered nagging questions about life after death. There were other things which I learned that troubled me, however. I learned about sin, the holiness of God, the rapture of the Church and about Hell. For a year or more I was often greatly troubled. I knew I had sinned and longed to know that my sins were forgiven. I tried to quit sinning but frankly realized that I was not succeeding in measuring up to the standards set by God. Now as I look back, I do not find fault with God for taking my two sisters. Rather, I see this as an act of mercy used to bring me and my parents to the Lord. I do not criticize my parents for teaching me a bedtime prayer that disturbed me. God used it to bring concern and conviction to my soul, which was all part of the set of circumstances used to bring me to Christ, the greatest thing that ever happened to me! One night when I was eight years old, I TO FEAR OR NOT TO FEAR are afraid of the term "saved." They seem to think that Some people assurance of salvation will cause spiritual indifference and careless living. Such fear results from misunderstanding. When a person is saved, he will not want to continue living in sin. If the experience is real, it will change the life. It will not make a person perfect, but it will produce a change. Paul asked, "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" (Rom. 6:1,2). In Ephesians 2:10, the Apostle Paul declared, "For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works..." The saved person works because he is saved and wants to show gratitude to the Lord. There is no greater motive for good works than love. came out of that worried condition into wonderful assurance that my sins were forgiven. The fear melted away as I came to rest upon the promises of God that at death I would without fail go to be in Heaven with the Lord. When the question of my eternal destiny was settled, a tremendous relief flooded my soul. That night I was saved! "BEING SAVED" IS SCRIPTURAL Before I continue telling you how I got saved, I want to establish that there is such a thing as being saved. Jesus spoke about people being saved. He said, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved..." (John 10:9). The Apostle Paul wrote much about being saved. He wrote, "But unto us which are saved it is the power of God" (I Cor. 1:18). Several tacts about this saved condition can be established from that verse. First, there is such a thing as being saved NOW.Second, it is obvious that not everybody is saveu, for some are perishing. Third, it is revealed that being saved is related in gome way to the individual's response to the message of the cross. More about that later. If the Bible teaches that one can know that he is saved now, I will not be content to settle for anything less. lot ,11 .0 ttti HOMO m idflnm "two 0 (C rn WroiJ-a v 0J i r n io flOfflJ; ft' In his epistle, James warns that there is a type of shallow faith that does not save. Merely believing facts will not save one. "The devils (demons) also believe and tremble (James 2:19). Real saving faith does work. Anyone who thinks that he is saved, but lacks good works had better wake up to realize that his brand of faith is not saving faith. The Apostle Paul warned, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith: prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in yog, except ye be reprobates?" (II Cor. 13:5). There is, however, a comforting side of the issue too. No Christian lives a perfect life, but his safety does not depend upon the fragile thread of his own faithfulness. Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand" (John 10: 27, 28). In John 5:24 Jesus said, "He that mobile home. 14 air conditioned, carpeted, plenty of closet space, unique floor plant. Call 257 5129, Tre monton. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (Titus 3:5). It is not unscript-ura- l for one to say that he is saved, or even to say, "I was saved on a certain night." If that kind of certainty is offered by the Lord in the Bible, then a person is robbing himself of a great blessing if he goes through life hoping he will be saved or trying to be saved. The Bible has something better to offer! Good heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."'By believing, a person receives eternal life. If it could end, it would not be eternal. Furthermore, the promise is made that he will never come into condemnation. CERTAINTY PRODUCES DILIGENCE Certainty of one's eternal destiny produces holiness in living and diligence in service. The Apostle John wrote "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins..." (I John 2:1,2). Since I have assurance that my failures are not going to rob me of Heaven, I need not get discouraged and give up. If I feared that after trying to serve the Lord faithfully for thirty years (or even seventy years), I might die in a weaker moment and be lost, I would be fearful and inclined to give up now. No such doubts and uncertainties harass me. My eternal destiny is settled, so I serve without fear of losing my salvation in the end. My salvation rests not upon my faithfulness, but rather upon His faithfulness. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Phil. 1:6). GROUNDS FOR ASSURANCE will be taken to Heaven to be with the Lord where he will be taken from the very PRESENCE OF SIN. Wonderful salvation! , Furthermore, some day he HOW TO BE SAVED Now the most important question needs to be considered, which is, "How can a person be saved?" Ephesians 2:8,9 states, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast." This verse is not speaking of resurrection from the grave, which every person will eventually experience. This salvation is NOT automatic or universal. This salvation is conditioned upon faith! Now it should be apparent to the thoughtful person that not all people have faith, for some are atheists and others are simply skeptics. Furthermore, this verse is not talking about what is often called, "exaltation." Bible salvation is not obtained by keeping the commandments, living by the Golden Rule or by observing other rules and regulations. Bible salvation is BY GRACE! It is not deserved. Furthermore, it is a GIFT. It is not worked for or paid for by the receiver. Someone else paid for it completely. Beware! You are missing Bible salvation if you are trusting your works, for God has declared that it is NOT OF WORKS! Only one condition is required to receive this wonderful salvation: FAITH. "For by grace are ye saved through faith..." (Eph. 2:8). This is not the shallow intellectual faith about which James warned. This is genuine, sincere faith that saves the soul. This is faith in a Person, the Lord Jesus How can a person tell whether or not he is really a Christian? That is a very important question. There are three basic tests. First, there is the matter of a DECISION. Can you point back to a time when you trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? The Christ. It is faith in his blood shed upon the cross to provide forgiveness. true Christian is trusting Christ completely and putting "no confidence in MORE PRECIOUS PROMISES i the flesh" (Phil. 3:3). Second, a saved person will have new DISCERNMENT The promises of God can bring peace of spiritual truths, especially a better understanding of the Bible. "But the to your soul. Third, the laitn nam saveu uiue, go in peace new Christian discovers that his life is (Luke 7:50). DIFFERENT. One man who had been a very profane individual testified "He was in the world, and the world "When I got saved, I lost 90 percent of was made by him, and the world knew him not. "SAVED" DEFINED It is time to define what is meant by being saved. Some people ask, "Saved from what?" The Bible tells us what we are saved from. We are saved from the guilt of sin, from the penalty of sin, from the punishment of sin and from an eternal hell. To be saved from all those things is wonderful, but there is more to salvation. The Christian has been saved from the PENALTY of sin, and in daily life he can experience deliverance from the POWER of sin. , "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the Son of God" (John only begotten 3:14-18- ). "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (I (Note: the above five verses are John 4:10). among the most concise and precise Gospel verses' in the Bible.
