Show THE fftov 5 Bear River will play three basketball contests in the next seven days-t- wo for pride and one for a chance to win some for the marbles. The Bears host arch-rivBox Elder Friday night and then turn right around for a al playoff berth the Bears must win to earn entry into the tournament which starts March 7 at the University of Utah. "It's been a frustrating year," Coach Paul Jeppesen says in a bit of an under3-- A isit to the crackerbox Log-a- i high gym. The Bears play Cypress torch 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ogden high gym. Admission is $1 for students, $2 for adults. The Cypress contest is the statement. "We've had opportunities to win two or three different (region) games and have made mistakes and haven't been able to do it." The latest case in point was the Bear's loss to the Bonneville Lakers. The Bears had a couple of ways 53-5- 2 of winning it. Although outdistanced from the field (Bonneville made 24, goals for the Bears), the Bears could have won it from the line where they shot 14 of 22 while the Lakers were only 5 of 14. And in the final seconds, the Bears managed to snare away a jump ball as Nolan Hess hit Mark Williams breaking for the basket. But the ball wouldn't go in. The game was just another of those "almost" contests that have plaqued the Bears. Just the game before, the Bears had led Skyview much of the way only to fall short by three in the end. Looking back, Bear River fans can pick out a number compared to 19 of contests which could have been different. Bear River lost to Judge Memorial for instance, by ) five outscoring the Bulldogs by eight fieldgoals. But from the line, the Bears could manage only five of 16 while Judge picked up 26 of (68-63- 35. The Bears lost by two to Ogden and had a 9 lead over Weber at the third quarter mark in their first meeting before falling apart to lose They lost to Ben Lomond 42-3- 62-4- after being tied at 54-4- 8 halftime and to Roy, although each team scored 20 fieldgoals. 59-4- The first Skyview encount er was a one point loss in overtime followed by the three point loss in the return 58-5- 7 match. The Bears even had a four point halftime lead in their first half loss to Box Elder, The Bears can look back and see a key turnover or a missed "sure" shot in many instances that could have changed the outcome. "We're a better team than our record shows,'-- ' Jeppesen persisted, continuing to believe in his squad. "Barry (Bradshaw) has been playing better the last three or four games," Jeppesen noted. "If he'd been 65-5- TIMES, February 24. 1977. Page 7 And the Grizzlies went on a LEADER-GARLAN- doing that all year, we'd have a few more wins. Against the Lakers, the center hit for twelve points on five of eight from the field. Williams led the team with 19 points and Tad Morrison had 11 points. Jeppesen is psyching his players out this week by pointing out that the Box Elder outing could decide who has the honor of finishing last in Region One. Both squads have 8 records. The Logan matchup could be a grudge fight. Bear River broke their losing ways at the expense of the Grizzlies in the first half. 2-- four game thereafter. losing streak Jeppesen would also like to give his Bears some sort of momentum going into the playoff game with last place Cyprus of Region Five. The but as Cyprus squad is Jeppesen points out, "anything can happen in a playoff 1, game." When-a- nd if the Bears win that game, they play the 4:10 p.m. game Tuesday, March 8, in the tournament going against Region 3-- Six's third place team--whic- h presently is either American Fork or Springvil-le- .
