Show SPECIAL SECTION. LEADER-GARLAN- TIMES, February D You might say I 17, 1977, Page 13 started the cattle business in when I was born' "You might say I started cattle business when I was born," chuckled Doug Roche of West Fielding. "I was raised in a family of 11 sisters and 3 brothers in a farm in Thatcher just south of here." " "Dad had some cattle on the place and when I married J. 0. Hadfield's daughter, Doris, I found out he had cattle on his place." So, the enterprising Roche ended up on the Hadf ield and the adjoining Rich ranch. "The Riches have owned this ground for over a hundred years. We have been leasing it from them and running some of their cattle in with ours since 1950," revealed Roche. "Cattle is a tough old game nowadays. We take our beef to whoever in the - Doug Roche gives us a tenth of a cent more," Roche noted. , Jeff, age 19 and Lola, 15, are the top hands at the Roche Ranch. Doug's other two sons, Vernon and have moved on but by no means have they been forgotten. Both have left a sizable collection of rodeo trophies and mementos that grace the Roche household. With Jeff winning the National Rookie of the Year award at Bozeman, Montana during the College National Finals, it's easy to see why the elder Roche has never had trouble from a bucking animal on his cattle ranch yet. Mrs. Roche has a teaching position in town, so it boils right down to Jeff and his Dad for the dirty work. La-Ma- And dirty it is, even though Roche has sold a few calves that people have won awards with, Roche's farm is mainly designed for the day in, day out, hard, dirty but apparently rewarding cattle business. . The Roche's farm includes 60 acres of irrigated ground, 860 acres of dry ground, and 1,800 acres of rangeland. This is where their 1,100 calf, 570 cow, 24 bull cattle operation centers. He runs Herefords exclusively with a Semintol cross. "The Hereford were bred too pure, so I'm breeding in Semintol to increase the milk capacity of the cows. The Hereford isn't known for its milk," Roche related. Papa Roche and his son, Jeff, are currently involvv ' PAINT I VINYL LATEX No. 77005 J DOUG ROCHE AND in calving at the farm.
