Losers play 'Feb. 23 at 9:30 p.m. at the high When 98 pound fly weight Brian Pali squares off against an opponent few people in the stands would think he has a weight problem. Likewise with 126 pound Max Crozier. But they do. And what they put themselves thru just for the privledge of wrestling would make a fat man quake in fear. Take Pali's weekly routine, for instance, during the wrestling season. "I have to lose about ten pounds each week," Pali said. That's not once a season but every week. The junior grappler gets up to 110 or 111 pounds each week and by 5 p.m. on Thursday-wrestli- ng to be day-h- as down to 101 pounds or he doesn't get on the mat. To start with both Pali and Crozier have come up with a unique use for the garbage can liners. Instead of filling them, they wear them. Both wrestlers and others on the squad daily pull the plastic liners over their bodies wearing them beneath an outer sweatshirt to literally force themselves to sweat. "The bag keeps you sweating when everybody else stops sweating," Pali offered. Even when you're just sitting around. The wrestler who will bid for a state tournament berth in the Region One championships this Friday and Saturday carries his weight-los- s training to bed with him at night. At night, he pulls seven blankets, two quilts and double sleeping bags over him at night to force him to sweat out the weight thru the night. Underneath he's clad in a pair of thermals to aid the process. "I don't get too much of a rest," he admitted. Certain the part of his training which would be most torturous for today's typically overweight male is the dieting. "I don't eat from Monday morning until after the match," Pali offered. His training habits practice because it "makes you sick." The vomiting, on the other hand, flushes the Ipecec out of your system." If over weight s ill, he has a certain amount of time yet to do something to get under the limit. The remedy usually is several laps up and down the stairs in the gym for a 30 minute period. In that 30 minute period Pali can drop another pound. Both wrestlers and others like them also resort to the whirl pool bath to lose weight. "I've sat in the sweat room for five hours to make it," Pali observed. After making weight, Pali has anywhere from an hour to a half hour to get something down before getting on the mat. He usually grabs a sandwich and chugs down a quarl and a half uf orange juice from a thermos. To the outsider, the obvious question is why fight it? Why not go up to the next weight, 105, to wrestle? "If I go up a weight I wouldn't have as good a chance to place in state," Pali said. Both wrestlers say the best situation is when a wrestler can get below his weight so he can eat something before a match. But Pali says it never happens for him. On meet day he finds himself still anywhere from three to pounds over. Twice this year he has had to lose weight during the weigh-i- n period. "I don't have as hard a time as Brian does," Crozier said. He claims by wearing the garbage bag he can lose as much as four or five pounds a night in practice. Of course, his weight goes up some between each practice. Crozier usually starts out each week at somewhere around 137 pounds and must get down to 129. He doesn't fast as much as be- Pali but confines his meals to diet drinks, pieces of meat and cottage cheese. "During weekends, I only eat one good meal," he said. He drinks quantities of orange juice as well. "I'll usually go out and take off on my Honda on Saturdays and Sundays," Max said, to keep away from the dinner table and food. Pali chooses to watch TV while others in the family USG lf Rough Cut Lumber 2x6x16 2x6x18 brings." Neither wrestler seems to mind the physical discomforts but both admit that their contortions leave them feeling less than a 100 percent. In Pali's case, he says the inevitable loss of strength from all the dieting and exercise is less of a handicap than going to a heavier weight would be. Besides, his opponents many times go thru the same thing he does. "I figure its helping me over myget self," he offered in somewhat of an understatement. In the end, the week's effort can be over in less than six minutes. "It's your own six minutes," Pali said. "You're working man to man and muscle to muscle." approach weigh-istill a pound or two over the n limit. "If I'm overweight the day of the meet I go to the drug store and get Ipecae to make me throw up," the teenager explained matter of factly. He has used diarrhetics at times but doesn't like the 4W 2x10x16 2x4 out for the next match and tell yourself it's worth it... You get yourself convinced and go out and beat them."
