The fever may last three to five days and the nose and throat symj)toms are usually none by one week. A cough may last two to three weeks. Other symptoms to monitor are secondary bacterial infections such as ear infections, yellow drainage from the eyes or breathing difficulty. While can- doesn't affect how long a cold lasts, the symptoms can be relieved. Nasal discharge is the nose's way of eliminating viruses. To treat a runny nose with clear discharge or a dry stuffy nose, warm water saline nose drops and suctioning may be used. Prepare saline drops by teaspoon of table salt in 8 mixing ounces of w ater. Make up a fresh solution every few days and keep it in a clean bottle. Use a clean dropper or a cotton ball to insert the drops. Use up to three drops in each nostril, wait one minute, then use a soft rubber bulb syringe to gently suck out the svretions; or have the child blow his nose. Acetaminophen can be used for aches and mild fever over 102 degrees. For sore throat, saltw ater gargles, cough drops and hard candy may be used for children 4 or older. Call the clinic immediately if: The child has a fever greater than 100.4 rectally and is less than two months old; The child is under three years old and has an oral or tympanic (ear) temperature over 104; The fever is over 105 (oral or tympanic); Breathing becomes difficult and no better after you clear the nose; The child acts very sick; The fever lasts more than three days; The runny nose lasts more than two weeks; There is any suggestion of an earache or ( 5 sinus pain; The throat becomes very sore; You think your child is getting worse: For any questions or concerns. A cold is caused by direct contact with someone who already has a cold. Good hand washing is the best way to help prevent the spread of colds. Since complications are more common in children during the first year of life, try to avoid undue exposure of young babies to other children or adults with colds.
