Show HiCtop Sptr0r 13 2001 Fiesta kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month munity for many years and stood up for justice and equal rights for all people of color. One of his heroes in the community was Archultta. Archuleta is a retired schoolteacher and community activist. He is also an administrative assistant to Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, on issues dealing the minority community in Salt Lake City. The Hispanic Employment Program at Hill AFB has established four standing committees Career Enhancement Outreach and Recruitment Communications, and Scholarship. Ext. by John Medina Hispanic Employment Program manager A fiesta on SepL 21 will kick off the Hill AFB celebration of Hispanic Heritage Observance Month. "Paving the Way to the Future" is the theme for the observance, celebrated from SepL 16 to Oct 15. Hill is also planning a Scholarship Luncheon Oct 4 at the Officers' Club. The fiesta will be at Centennial Park from 11 a.m.-- p.m. The $6 combination plate will include a choice of chicken or beef Fajitas, rice, beans, tortillas, salsa, Pico de Gallo, dessert and a soft and tasting drink. A homemade contest will help raise scholarship funds. "Our goal is to provide a more family-typ- e of day at the park while enjoying a variety of entertainment," said Master Sgt Luis Pena, event "We hope many of the attendees will bring their families and enjoy a great day at the park." o Entertainment includes a live band, a DJ, and band Mariachi an dancers, a Guatemalan sister duo. The Xs, a LosTejanos band, is an experienced and talented musical group, who deliver a variety of contemporary and old Tejano music, indigenous to the south Texas area. They also play country and western, golden oldies, and pop music. Band members are Alvaro Arguello, lead vocalist; Mario Rivera, guitar, bass and vocals; Ralph Ponce, guitar, Leroy Martinez, percussion; George Espinoza, trumpet and vocals; and Joe Mendoza, saxaphone and vocals. Each musician has 20 years in the entertainment business. The Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Luncheon Oct 4 will feature Robert "Archie" Archuleta as keynote speaker. The emphasis of this year's luncheon will be to acknowledge the first recipients of the Hill AFB Hispanic Employment Pro gram Scholarships in a formal setting and also to pay tribute to Utah Sen. Pete Suazo, the previously scheduled keynote speaker who died during a hunting trip in August. Suazo was a champion for Utah's minority com Ext Stacy Lopez, LEEAG, Established in 1989, Hispanic American Heritage Month was set aside to acknowledge and celebrate the diverse Hispanic cultures of American society. The observance features a variety of activities on and around military installations worldwide, including keynote speakers, panel discussions, exhibits, films, special menus in military dining facilities and host of other activities.
