GRAND AM 4OV6 $1 71206A 2,788 culminates with the poster contest. The top finisher wins a trip to Disneyland in California. The pro- gram was founded in 1988 by a family physician in Denver. Her poster depicts a young girl with her older sister and the sister is teaching her to smoke. "I then drew her 10 years later and she couldn't stop smoking," Samala said. "And my motto at the bottom of the poster is The only adults who smoke are youth who couldn't quit,'" Samala said. She said she doesn't know where she got her idea for the poster, but she knows that smoking is dangerous. Her grandfather developed emphysema even after he quit smoking 15 years ago. The national winner is Caitlin Bond-figliof Idaho. She drew a boy in bed dreaming about what he could become if cigarettes don't cloud his goals. She was presented a plaque at the Services Quarterly Awards July 9. She also received an Army and Air Force Exchange Service gift certificate, a bowling pass and coupons for the NCO Club. James said she likes taking care of children because it makes her feel good to know that the children will learn things they can use in the future. "I like to see the smiles on their faces when they accomplish something after trying so hard," James said. James said she probably wouldn't have a daycare if it weren't for her husband, SSgt. Robert James, 649th Com- bat Logistics Support Squadron. "I couldn't do this without him," James said. "He's always been my backup. He helps out a lot with the kids." James said she's always had an interest in children and hopes to make a future career helping them. "I've completed three years of my early childhood development degree," James said. "I would like to work with mute and deaf children and teach them to use sign language." |
