Show 16 Hilltop Times July 18, 1996 Going to the dentist can be something to smile about by SSgt. Wilson Casquejo 75th Dental Squadron Smile! Going to the den- tist is not something to fear. More than 40 years of progress in dentistry has resulted in dramatic improvements in the oral health of Americans, and enormous savings on dental health care costs. Scientific breakthroughs, improved dental equipment and techniques, and increased consumer information efforts are responsible for these benefits. The following are among the major innovations which have marked the past four decades and given some direction for the future. Fluoride is considered to be the single most effective weapon against tooth decay. In 1945, the mineral was proven to prevent cavities strengthening by tooth enamel. Now it's available in toothpastes, mouth rinses, tablets, topical applications and fluoridated water supplies. Today, about 60 percent of Americans drink fluoridated water and half of school-ag- e children have' never had a cavity. Sealants are additional preventive measures that were created in the early 1970s and are strongly recommended by the American Dental Association. Sealants are plastic coatings applied to the tooth's chewing surfaces to fill microscopic pits and fissures in children's developing permanent molars. Recently, sealants have been come bined with fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel and reminer-aliz- e areas which show early signs of decay. CCCS is primarily a counseling service, supported by contributions from consumer leaders and merchants who sell goods and services on credit. To use CCCS services, individuals will be required to complete documentation that includes their monthly income, monthly expenses and a complete list of all debts. After a counselor has reviewed the completed forms, an appointment with a counselor will be made and a plan for debt liquidation will be made. CCCS personnel will intercede between an individual and his or her cre ditors. In most cases, the creditors will cease to personally call the individual and instead contact CCCS concerning the individual's account. The creditor usually refrains from further collection activities as long as the individual follows the outlined plan. Once CCCS determines an indi vidu- al is a candidate for its services, a $12 opening fee is charged, then there's a $5 or $10 monthly fee to cover the postage and labor to mail out the monthly bills. The service is available to all Department of Defense employees and military members and their families assigned to Hill AFB. For more information call Ext.
