Show 13 Hilltop Times July 18,1996 Navy sails into museum with mobile exhibit Story and photos by Sue Berk . Hilltop Times staff It was show and tell time when the Navy's Mobile Exhibit Van spent the day at the Hill Aerospace Museum Tuesday. More than 160 people walked through the van which is designed to promote Navy awareness. Through flashing lights, displays and television monitors, the visitors learned what the Navy has to offer. "We want to tell everyone that the Navy is still hiring," Petty Officer and Navy recruiter Doug Graffious said. "And the van is a great way for people to get information about our programs." "The van is an attention getter and catches peoples' eyes," Kevin Hadocks, equipment operator 2nd class and driver of the van, said. "When someone sees the van on the highway, they are going to remember it." The exterior of the entire van is neatly painted royal blue. On one side the words "Navy" are painted with the colors of the stars and stripes and on the other side a large eagle and U.S. flag can be seen. The interior is covered with lighted displays and seven television monitors to inform visitors about the career opportunities in the Navy's air, surface and subsurface arenas. Another section describes the educational opportunities the Navy 40-fo- ot offers. "When people think of the Navy they think of spending their entire career on the water. But, we have 60 different career fields and, depending on what occupation a person chooses, they may never spend any time on a ship," Graffious said. According to Hadocks, the Navy owns and operates six other similar vans. Each van costs approximately $400,000. They travel around the United States and stop at air shows, schools, fairs or anywhere there's an opportunity to publicize the Navy's programs. The van will return to Utah to take part in the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City Sept. When a van reaches its destination, local recruiters spend time e around the van talking to visitors and answering specific questions. Graffious, who works out of the Roy recruiting office, was on hand Tuesday to do just that. For more information about the Navy and its programs call Graffious at 1-- 4. one-on-on- mmmmmm ,A .
